Elastomer allows welding of clear
tubes
A recent article in our sister publication Medical Design
describes how a maker of weldable tubing can now join clear tubes to
transparent medical components without compromising strength. Sure Bond
tubing, the brainchild of Natvar., a Tekni-Plex Co., and
Gentex Corp., is a three-layer coextruded tube with a
polyethylene inner layer to prevent absorption, a proprietary middle
layer for adhesion, and an outer elastomer layer for bonding. It uses a
patented Clearweld additive compounded into the elastomer that creates a
clear, aesthetically appealing, stable joint without unwanted gaseous
inclusions.

Adhesive Has Exceptionally High Thermal
Conductivity
Master Bond
EP21AN is a two
part epoxy resin system with a thermal conductivity in excess of
22Btuinch/ft2hr°F.
It is an outstanding electrical insulator with a dielectric strength
of >400 volts/mil and a volume resistivity greater than 1013
ohm cm. This easy to use adhesive
has been formulated with a non-critical one to one mix ratio by
weight or volume.
It cures readily at ambient temperatures. Its coefficient of thermal
expansion is a desirable 18-20 x 10-6
in/in/°C.

Rivet gun automates assembly
Manufacturers have long wanted a rivet gun that was fast, lightweight,
and durable enough for the assembly line. But the engineering challenges
of building such a tool proved too difficult, until now. Engineers at
Cheetah Tools developed an air-operated rivet gun that cuts in
half the task of installing a rivet.

Quick-to-install copper couplings
Style 607 QuickVic rigid couplings can reportedly join 2 to 4-in. (50 to
100-mm) copper tubing in half the time it takes to install grooved
couplings. The rigid coupling is “installation-ready” with no loose
parts to drop or lose and no hazardous flames or noxious fumes as with
soldering and brazing. QuickVic couplings are rated to 300 psi (2,065
kPa) and have a proprietary EHP gasket that withstands temperatures from
−30 to 250°F (−34 to 121°C). The angled-bolt pad
design enables metal-to-metal assembly which provides visual
confirmation of proper installation. The coupling can be installed
faster with an impact wrench.

Adhesive rolls, sheets with no edge
curl
Hot and cold adhesive tapes up to 60-in. wide can be laminated, slit,
and rewound on one machine. Use of a new heat-lamination system permits
the rewinding of pressure-sensitive adhesive products, rolls, and
sheets. Full contact with the 180° round drum eliminates edge curl
from the materials.

Software simplifies thread element
calculations
ThreadSpecs 2.0 helps simplify calcuation of critical thread elements
and characteristics for UN, UNJ, Buttress, Acme, Metric, Metric J, and
Whitworth thread forms. Users enter thread size data for real time
determination of dimensions for the manufacture or inspection of
standard or special external and internal threads, regardless of
diameter or pitch. The Windows-supported program calculates the effects
of plating and coating on thread dimension data display in inch or
metric formats. And it provides immediate recalculation upon input
change re-initialization. It also calculates max/min and tolerances for
major diameter, minor diameter, pitch diameter, and root radius for UN,
UNJ, M, and MJ threads. ThreadSpecs 2.0 Thread Engineering Program is
$395.

Self-clinching fastener press
The Pemserter Series 2000 automatic press uses a dual-bowl option and QX
Turret Tool system to quickly change between anvil tools while
installing different self-clinching fasteners. The second bowl and the
turret tool system lets two fastener types instal in automatic feed
mode. Touchscreen setup for all four stations includes selection of
installation force and number of fasteners to be installed per
work-piece. The CE-certified press has a 24-in. (61 cm) throat depth,
performs at cycle rates up to 2,750 strokes/hr and delivers a ram force
of 400 to 16,000 lb (2.7 to 71.2kN). It has a job search and recall mode
so operators can reference 300 stored jobs and return to previous jobs
quickly and easily and is Ethernet capable.

Compact stainless steel latch for small
enclosures
A compact, M1-15 latch joins a line of push-to-close latches for
enclosures that must resist corrosion. The durable stainless steel latch
fits smaller profile doors and drawers. Pull-tab actuation and
push-to-close latch engagement provide fingertip convenience for opening
and closing. And with a 122 lb (545 N) maximum recommended working-load
rating — higher than most latches of similar size — the
M1-15 is robust enough for mobile applications where the contents of an
enclosure can shift and create an impact load on the inside of the door.
Cast stainless steel withstands harsh marine environments or repetitive
washdown and cleaning cycles in foodservice, medical, or industrial
applications. It easily installs a single 1.5-in. round hole, and
presents a smooth, virtually flush installed look with no visible
mounting hardware. Provided with a reversible mounting bracket, it
accommodates door panel thicknesses from 0.02 to 0.75 in. (0.5 to 19
mm).

Rev up your interdisciplinary design skills
What happens when a microcontroller turns on a power FET, sending a
current pulse to a motor coil that develops a magnetic field which turns
the rotor shaft, advancing a timing belt that drives a pair of nip rolls
suspended on bearings in a web-processing operation on a form, fill, and
seal machine installed on a potato chip line at a Frito Lay plant in
central California? And how can you be sure that the encoders, prox
sensors, and other feedback devices you plan to use will accurately see
and report every relevant motion, machine state, and process condition?
And will the signals get through the networks fast enough, without being
corrupted, giving the controllers time to execute their algorithms as
intended? It's a lot to think about, and it only scratches the surface
of what many engineers grapple with today. If you happen to be one of
them, then the place for you — where you can find answers and meet
others with similar concerns — is www.Mechatronic-Design.com.

TIME: 2:00pm ET/11am PT
Developing a wireless sensor network can be an awesome challenge or a
simple matter of picking the right module, depending on who you ask.
Off-the-shelf solutions have certain advantages, but may not be the best
overall solution to your problem. Home grown or custom solutions can be
designed to overcome specific challenges, so they can be critical for
certain projects. Learn more about the technical pros & cons of both
options in this live course.

Glued-together freight haulers
Wabash National Corp. will replace traditional
joining techniques on its dry-freight and refrigerator vans with
Engineered Adhesives and Fusor Aftermarket Repair Adhesives from Lord Corp. Fusor
adhesives and procedures have been used in the dry freight/refrigerated
van industry for more than a decade. Lord says the adhesives improve
aesthetics, increase strength and rigidity, as well as eliminate leak
points and galvanic, under-bond, and general surface corrosion.

Spirol redesigns brass compression
limiters
Spirol International Corp.
Spirol redesigned its CL101 and CL111 Brass Compression Limiters to
significantly reduce cost. The original brass limiters were introduced
in the 1990s when plastics began replacing metal assemblies. Brass
Compression Limiters were initially designed with a thick wall to
prevent the plastic from cracking as bolts tightened. After many
hundreds of uses through the years, it became clear that Brass
Compression Limiters could have thinner walls and still meet the
majority of application requirements.

Fastening technology & bolted joint
design
Seminars For Engineers USA, a div. of Sensor
Products Inc. USA, will host two-day technical seminars May 28
to 29 in Los Angeles and Nov. 5 to 6 in Houston. The seminars will give
engineers current specifications for, and a better understanding of, the
complexities of mechanical joining with fasteners. The Federal
regulations (Fastener Quality Act) on these often safety critical design
elements has put a renewed focus on the proper use of fasteners. This
seminar incorporates the most recent techniques and guidelines from both
international and domestic engineering societies and research groups and
gives attendees immediately applicable knowledge.
