From this last week of February, readers in many parts of the country can see the end of winter. This week I found Cooking for Engineers kept the winter blues at bay, especialy the way the author summarizes recipes with compact tables.

Outside the kitchen, this week we'll take a look at hinge and enclosure design, the basics of joining metals and ceramics, and co-molding with thermoplastic elastomers. Also check out some recently released products, upcoming events, and industry news.

As always, stay in touch by email or at our website.

Cabinet-level decision-making
So you’re designing an enclosure. You look through your old notes, but it seems you slept through the enclosuredesign component of Engineering 101. You assume it can’t be that hard, until you start looking at all the available hinge, latch, handle, and support options. And you know that designing it right the first time saves time and money, not to mention your reputation, so let’s take a minute to look at the design considerations and hardware choices that will result in the best enclosure for the money.

Basics of Design Engineering: Joining Metals & Ceramics
Many applications require joining metals to ceramics, such as sealing electrodes to glass enclosures for light bulbs. Such joints need to provide continuous chemical contact across the interface through chemical bonding to the mating materials. Several techniques are available to provide metal-to-ceramic bonds.

TPE market growth continues
Thermoplastic elastomers (TPEs) are showing up in more and more places these days. The array of polymers that fall under the TPE umbrella, not to mention the color, texture, and property options they offer designers, can be truly bewildering. But sorting out the TPE universe can help a designer cut part count, shorten process time, and improve product durability.

Energy Efficiency Web Conference & Expo –
May 14

Do you know you can get in-depth education on energy-efficiency and all the benefits of an in-person trade show without ever leaving your desk or spending a dime?
The intelligent use of energy is making headlines. Product designers and manufacturers are striving to deliver products that consume less power, extend battery life, generate less heat, or work from alternative energy sources. Our Energy Efficiency Web Conference and Expo will educate design engineers, product developers, and managers on how to make the best use of energy-efficient product innovations and devices, and on how to arrange them in systems to lower power consumption and stay "green." This special one-day event will include sessions on such areas as:
  • Power-efficient drive techniques for lighting
  • ROI for high-efficiency capital equipment
  • Energy monitoring and energy standards
  • Designing for SEMI S23 and the Energy Act of 2007
  • Working with alternative power and battery technology
Make plans now to attend the Energy Efficiency Web Conference and Expo. The event offers a full day of live webinars and interactive booths, along with a Resource Center where visitors can download or link to additional materials.
