As in many parts of the U.S., temperatures at the Bonneville Salt
Flats, Utah, are hitting their summer peak. In the guts of the cars that
will test their mettle at Speed Week in early August, things are really
heating up, however. Some serious design work, metallurgy, and joining
know-how went into building machines like the British-built Inspiration.
Also in this issue, check out the basics of joining
plastics and EPA-regulation-friendly connections,
plus new products and industry
updates.

200 mph and powered by steam
The British
Steam Team's takes its car, Inspiration, out during Speed Week
August 8 to 14 at the Bonneville Salt Flats seeking to break 200 mph
after six years of development. They may be thinking about the wind in
their hair, but we're wondering about the joints that keep this
high-pressure baby running.
The 25-ft long, 3-ton car will burn liquid propane in 12 boilers. Each
boiler must provide 3.3 lpm of steam. Steam pipes are stainless steel
and up to 11-mm thick in places to cope with the 400°C steam and 40 bar
pressures inside of them.

The basics of joining plastics
After last month's enewsletter linked to an article on laser
staking, we thought it might be worthwhile to review other ways to join
plastic parts.
One of Machine
Design's Basics of Design Engineering articles discusses several
techniques for joining plastic parts. Equipment cost and labor for each
method vary considerably. Most techniques have limits on the sizes and
types of plastic that can be joined.

High-strength, UV-curing adhesives
Master Bond UV10TK40 modified epoxy adhesive has a tensile strength
of 8,300 psi and a Shore D hardness over 75. It cures tack free in air
and gels rapidly upon UV light exposure to a Tg over 94°C. The adhesive
has low shrinkage and good dimensional stability, heat stability, and
chemical resistance.
The adhesive is 100% reactive and contains no volatiles or hazardous
solvents. It is recommended for clear coating, sealing, and bonding in
any application requiring critical alignment or exact positioning.

Heat-exchanger gasket materials
09-538/E8ZP4, 09-560/E9291, and 26-006/H8ZP1 are gasketing materials
for plate heat exchangers. 09-538/E8ZP4 is an ethylene propylene diene
M-class (EPDM) rubber that operates for over a year in hot water or
steam up to 347°F. 09-560/E9291 is an EPDM material formulated to
resist steam, formaldehyde, organic acids, and amines. 26-006/H8ZP1's
hydrogenated nitrile butadiene rubber (HNBR) formulation withstands
continuous temperatures up to 347°F and can operate in hot water and
steam environments.

Nylon hose clamps
The Kwik Clamp line of nylon hose clamps now withstand -40 to 302°F
and handle moderate nonhydraulic pressure applications in a wide variety
of industries. A double row of durable teeth ensure a strong bond that
will not vibrate loose. The black, nylon 6-6 clamps won’t corrode or
rust, and installation and removal requires no tools.
The lightweight, nonconductive clamps may be reused and are available in
over thirty sizes, from ¼ through 4¼-in. OD.

The Energy Efficiency Web Conference & Expo
Engineers saw and heard great educational content at the Energy
Efficiency Web Conference and Expo. If you missed the live virtual
event, don’t despair! An archive of the full day’s agenda is now
available.
Design engineers are required to integrate energy efficiency into their
designs while maintaining lower costs, the highest reliability or both.
The editors of Machine Design understand these challenges
and have developed this conference to help engineers understand the
recently imposed energy mandates. The information presented at this
educational event will help engineers compare the different technologies
and product related to energy efficiency. Attendees will gain access to
the technical information needed to help them make the best decisions
without having to travel or take time away from current projects.
Visit the archive to:
- View informative webinars on energy efficiency
- Visit interactive booths where you can contact suppliers
- Peruse the Resource Center where you can download or link to
additional pertinent energy efficiency information
