Staying up to date .. read
now!
With this edition of Fluid Power Monthly, we hope to help you learn
more so you can continue to do your job to the best of your ability.
Featured articles include critical tips when picking a remanufacturing
service, an update on the goings-on at the Center for Compact and
Efficient Fluid Power, an introduction to hybrid technology from Parker
Hannifin Corp., and a tutorial on open-center vales. We also highlight
some important new products, including ones for filtration, control, and

8-11 in Las Vegas. The event offers an extensive conference program. We
will return again with popular information sessions on hydraulic
troubleshooting, safety, and more.
Attendees can see all exhibits in both shows, plus attend any and all
Fluid Power Conference & Expo seminar sessions. The cost is only $75 for
one day, and $150 for two days! Register here and click on “Non-Member Registration” to
get started. (To get the $75 or $150 price, be sure to register for
“Fluid Power Conference & Expo.”) For more information on the Fluid
Power Conference and Expo, contact Michael Ference or call
(216) 931-9352. For more information on WasteExpo, contact Rita Ugianskis or call (813)

Hybrid drive from Parker reduces fuel use,
emissions
Parker Hannifin Corp. continues to refine its hybrid drive
technology, which is an advanced hydromechanical series drive system
designed to significantly reduce fuel consumption and increase
productivity in vehicles with high start-and-stop applications.

Open-center valves in mobile equipment
Most of the topics in this column have focused on industrial, or
stationary applications. These machines usually feature some form of
closed-loop control, which requires continuous feedback of position,
pressure or both. Mobile equipment, sometimes called off-highway
equipment, uses a human operator to close the control loop. The
operator’s eyes, ears, and touch act as sensors; the brain serves as
the control; and arms, hands, legs, and feet operate the valves that
control the hydraulic system.

On the move with the CCEFP
Since 2006, the Center for Compact and Efficient Fluid Power (CCEFP)
has been bringing together industry, research, and education to
transform fluid power technology. The Center will be undergoing an audit
by the National Science Foundation this month as its seeks to renew its
funding for another five years. Such funding supports the Center’s 22
research projects and five test beds, which focus primarily on
efficiency, compactness, and effectiveness. The following case studies
highlight two of the ongoing research projects by educators and
researchers at the University of Minnesota, one of the CCEFP’s
affiliate colleges.

Web Exclusive: Finding the right fluid power
remanufacturing service
When a component breaks, it is critical to get a new part or have it
fixed immediately, to avoid machine downtime and costs. That’s why
most users of hydraulic and pneumatic technologies tend to use
remanufacturing services to get their machines up and running — it’s
easy to get a new part within just 24 hours if you work with a good
remanufacturer you know and trust.

Filtration system
MFD dual filtration system from Schroeder Industries removes
particulate contamination and/or water quickly, conveniently and
economically. It clears up existing systems and pre-filters new fluids,
because new fluids often have contamination levels significantly higher
than recommended for most hydraulic systems. It features a modular base
that eliminates hoses and fittings between components, a drip pan, and
easier element servicing through the K9 base-ported filter housing. It
significantly reduces noise, being reduced from 91 to 72 dBA
at full load. It comes with a D5 Dirt Alarm that indicates when the
filter element needs to be changed.

Rodless pneumatic actuator
New 146000 series Lintra Plus rodless actuator from Norgren is 100%
dimensionally interchangeable with the Series 46000 Lintra. It features
a lightweight design; standard multiported end caps; improved cover
strips for better dust and foreign particle prevention; enhanced piston
design that increases moment loading capability on the internally guided
model; and adjustable mounting patterns on the carriage for mounting
flexibility.

Hydraulic pumps
F15 Ferra pumps from Haldex Hydraulic Systems are developed
especially for targeted applications with construction equipment,
material handling and agricultural markets for the mobile off-highway
industry. Rugged, compact two-piece housing design together with state
of the art gear geometry allow them to work at high pressures with
reduced pressure pulsation and low noise operation. They are rated for
displacements from 19 to 50 cc, maximum pressure to 276 bar and maximum
speed to 3600 rpm.

Pressure transducer
Type-595XP explosion-proof current-to-pressure I/P transducer from
ControlAir Inc. is small in size and light weight, yet is less sensitive
to shock, vibration and position change than other I/P’s. Conversion
technology uses open-loop control for a high level of regulation
accuracy and repeatability for the operation of actuated valves. It can
mount in any position and is stable in high vibration environments.
Porting is either 1/4 in. (pneumatic) or 1/2 in. (electric) NPT. It
offers input signal of 4-20 mA and output ranges of 3-15, 3-27, and 6-30
psig. It is rated for flows to 2.4 scfm and maximum supply pressure of
22 psi.

Energy Efficiency Web Conference & Expo – May 14
Do you know you can get in-depth education on energy-efficiency and all
the benefits of an in-person trade show without ever leaving your desk
or spending a dime?
The intelligent use of energy is making headlines. Product designers and
manufacturers are striving to deliver products that consume less power,
extend battery life, generate less heat, or work from alternative energy
sources. Our Energy Efficiency Web Conference and Expo will
educate design engineers, product developers, and managers on how to
make the best use of energy-efficient product innovations and devices,
and on how to arrange them in systems to lower power consumption and
stay "green." This special one-day event will include sessions
on such areas as:
- Power-efficient drive techniques for lighting
- ROI for high-efficiency capital equipment
- Energy monitoring and energy standards
- Designing for SEMI S23 and the Energy Act of 2007
- Working with alternative power and battery technology
Make plans now to attend the Energy Efficiency Web Conference and Expo. The
event offers a full day of live webinars and interactive booths, along
with a Resource Center where visitors can download or link to additional
materials.

Understanding Key Power Transmission Technologies:
Comparing Belt, Chain & Gear Drives for OEM Projects
Sponsored by Rexnord
DATE: May 28th, 2009
TIME: 2:00pm ET/11am PT
OEM design teams are under pressure to juggle technologies with
specifications with the outcome always being a great new or improved
product. Many of these projects have Power Transmission components at
their core and the wrong technology can really hurt the end product.
Dennis Missun and Nick Derus from Rexnord have gathered
information about the critical issues that need to be considered when
deciding between belt, chain and gear drive technologies for
applications requiring 5 lbs – 100 lbs of force.
The course will cover
- Torque Density: comparing key rating systems AGMA & ISO
- Application considerations: impact of thermals, friction and
vibration
- Basics of sizing & selection: information to right-size
components
- Other Project/End Customer Considerations
- Live question/answer session with presenters
