The latest information on hydraulic and pneumatic motion control. August 18, 2009

Ask the expert

Our goal at Hydraulics & Pneumatics is to be your one and only stop for all things fluid power-related. To that end, we welcome Jim Kummer's blog, Hydraulic Talk, as a featured link on our website. Kummer is a fluid power consultant who provides answers and assistance on hydraulic issues, so we invite you to pose your hydraulic design questions to him when you're in need.

In the meantime, enjoy two featured articles from our August issue on mining, a refresher course in pumps, and a technical article on right-sizing pneumatic systems.

Electrohydraulics saves energy in excavator
Doosan Infracore, Seoul, South Korea, began manufacturing excavators in 1977 and has incorporated additional benefits with each new model introduced since then. Doosan’s DX180LC is no exception. Like its predecessors, the DX180LC relies heavily on hydraulics for propulsion, turret swing, and multiple-axis boom. However, the excavator ties in sophisticated elecrohydraulic control with equally sophisticated electronic engine control. This allows the machine to match engine power with hydraulic demands, ultimately resulting in high productivity and fuel economy. Upgrades to ergonomics and machine reliability, coupled with less-demanding regularly scheduled maintenance all add up to higher productivity and efficiency for the DX180LC.

Web Exclusive — Whole-sizing pneumatic motion systems
Too often, the flow coefficient CV is used to size a valve without giving consideration to the other components in a pneumatic circuit. In the past, a focus on the valve alone often sufficed because the cost of air was considered “free” and designers tended to significantly oversize the valve. Today’s emphasis on better energy management and optimized performance requires a more-exacting method to properly size pneumatic motion systems.

Give the mine a brake
Equipment design is a process usually driven by a problem or need that requires a solution. End users who encounter issues on the job may report their experiences to an equipment distributor. The distributor shares the feedback with the OEM, who then begins working on a solution, perhaps with the help of a component manufacturer. Occasionally the problem that starts this chain of communication is a flawed product. But far more often it’s just about finding a more efficient and productive way to get work done.

Pump it up with fluid power basics
Fluid power consultant Bud Trinkel gives readers a refresher course in pump design and use in "Chapter 8: Pumps and Accessories" of his fluid power eBook Fluid Power Basics. This chapter covers everything from pneumatic pumps all the way to descriptions of the most common hydraulic pumps available in the industry today — fixed-displacement pumps, variable-displacement pumps, and more.

New Products

Hydraulic motor controller
HGC-2 generator controller from High Country Tek Inc. controls a generator driven by a hydraulic motor where speed is controlled by a proportional solenoid valve, either directly at the motor or as part of the pump compensator. The closed-loop design aids in monitoring the ac line voltage from the generator output for outer loop closure and provides the necessary current to a valve coil in order to maintain the desired generator frequency. The unit has enough processing power and functionality when operating as a single control module to support a wide range of hydraulic generator applications.

Pressure gauge
PTS series pressure gauge from Winters Instruments is designed to be used with tube fitting applications. It is available in high temperature ranges up to and including 5000 psi, in both bottom and back connections. It can be used with most double ferrule tube fittings and allows for installation where space is limited or where a Teflon-free connection is required. Due to its ¼ tube stub connection, it allows for 360° orientation so that pressure reading can be made easily accessible.

Solenoid valve connectors
Series 5000 solenoid valve connectors from Canfield Connector are protective enclosures for electrical connection in conjunction with hydraulic and pneumatic solenoid valves. Available in mini, ISO, and sub-micro, their modular design can be used where rapid installation and service are required. ISO and 8-mm sub-micro connectors connect valves using DIN 43650/ISO 4400, EN175301-803:2000 specification and the mini and 9.4-mm sub-micro connectors are industry standards.

The Energy Efficiency Web Conference & Expo

Engineers saw and heard great educational content at the Energy Efficiency Web Conference and Expo. If you missed the live virtual event, don’t despair! An archive of the full day’s agenda is now available.

Design engineers are required to integrate energy efficiency into their designs while maintaining lower costs, the highest reliability or both. The editors of Machine Design understand these challenges and have developed this conference to help engineers understand the recently imposed energy mandates. The information presented at this educational event will help engineers compare the different technologies and product related to energy efficiency. Attendees will gain access to the technical information needed to help them make the best decisions without having to travel or take time away from current projects.
