Hijacking the engineering
profession
Read about one engineer's struggle to call himself an engineer and
how the National Society of Profesional Engineers and other PE groups
are fighting him in a quest to control who and what an engineer is.

Cut the Wires. Cut the Cost
The National
Instruments wireless sensor network (WSN) platform delivers
battery-powered nodes that offer industrial certifications, reliable
networking protocols, and optional outdoor enclosures for long-term,
stand-alone deployments. You can take advantage of NI LabVIEW software
integration with NI WSNs to select between Windows and LabVIEW Real-Time
OSs and simplify the extraction of high-quality measurement data.

Landing that engineer job
Here are some trips from recruiters from engineering firms and HR
profesionals on how to land that perfect engineering job.

Amusement park ride goes wet 'n'
wild
Water rides are a great way to beat the summer heat and have a lot
of fun while you’re at it. Trouble is, once your 60-second ride is
over, you have to tackle dozens of flights of stairs to do it again.
But that may become a thing of the past if a prototype simulator catches
on. It can create the sensation of riding a water slide 450-ft high and
3,600-ft long — and it could fit in your back yard.

Video: Flexible force and pressure
sensors
Engineers at Tekscan Inc. are designing and building tactile
touch-force sensors that can be measure from 20 grams to over 500 kg of
force. They can also combine several sensors to give pressure profiles
of real-time events.

Sanitary RTD sensors
The PRS-3 Series sanitary RTD sensors are used in food, dairy,
beverage, and biopharmaceutical clean-in-place applications. The sensors
come with heavy and standard-duty probes.
The stepped design of the heavy-duty 3/16 to 3/8-in.-diameter probe stem
offers added strength. The standard duty has a ¼-in.-diameter
probe. Both versions have standard probe lengths of 3, 4, 5, and 6 in.
and feature wetted surfaces of 316L stainless steel and surface finishes
of 32 µin. or better.
Additional features include a four-conductor; 120-in.-long PFA cable
with molded nylon strain relief; standard 1½-in., 16AMP Tri-Grip
mounting cap; four-wire Pt100 Class A platinum RTD sensor (100.00
± 0.06 Ω at 0°C) standard; –50 to 200°C
process-measurement temperature; and compatibility with three and
two-wire RTD instruments and transmitters.

Pressure transducer
The 3300 Series pressure transducer is designed for low-pressure
applications that demand small size, low cost, high accuracy, and
stability.
The transducer’s all-stainless-steel wetted parts and all-welded
construction make it compatible with harsh chemicals and
environments.
Available in pressure ranges from 15 to 250 psi, the unit is capable of
operating at –40 to 257°F. The transducer is available in voltage,
current, and ratiometric outputs, with a wide selection of connectors,
pressure fittings, and mating connectors.

The Energy Efficiency Web Conference & Expo
Engineers saw and heard great educational content at the Energy
Efficiency Web Conference and Expo. If you missed the live virtual
event, don’t despair! An archive of the full day’s agenda is now
available.
Design engineers are required to integrate energy efficiency into their
designs while maintaining lower costs, the highest reliability or both.
The editors of Machine Design understand these challenges
and have developed this conference to help engineers understand the
recently imposed energy mandates. The information presented at this
educational event will help engineers compare the different technologies
and product related to energy efficiency. Attendees will gain access to
the technical information needed to help them make the best decisions
without having to travel or take time away from current projects.
Visit the archive to:
- View informative webinars on energy efficiency
- Visit interactive booths where you can contact suppliers
- Peruse the Resource Center where you can download or link to
additional pertinent energy efficiency information
