Want to buy a car from a bankrupt automaker?
Does anybody want to buy a car from a bankrupt automaker? That was something I pondered as I passed a GM dealership recently. The answer to that question may determine the future of the auto industry in the U.S. Read more

Options for unemployed engineers
Engineering career expert Joel Orr has some advice for the unemployed: Your “forced retirement” or separation pay won’t let you live in the style to which you’ve become accustomed, and you need more income. A gig as a Wal-Mart greeter or Starbucks barista won’t quite do it. Here are some options: If finding another job in your profession is your goal, focus on that. Get your LinkedIn profile up to date. Network locally. Many synagogues and churches have groups to encourage and help job seekers.

Fast Inspection, Tight Integration

National Instruments' Embedded Vision System is a rugged automated controller that combines industrial camera compatibility with the open communication of a distributed industrial system and the high-performance and flexibility of a multicore PC for industrial applications.

More efficient soda machines
Proposed new standards released by the U.S. Dept. of Energy (DOE) would cut the average energy use of the most common new cold-beverage vending machines by about 42%. The proposals reduce energy use of the increasingly popular glass-front machines by 35 to 42% compared to basic machines available today. Read more.

Semiconductor manufacturing: Times are still hard
Suppliers are bailing out and looking desperately for customers in other industries. Semiconductor-equipment makers have gone through waves of layoffs and see few "green shoots" of new business.
Sound like a description ripped from today's headlines? Guess again. This is how it was for semiconductorequipment makers in the last big downturn of 2001 and 2002. Things are even worse today.
"You are looking at a decline in spending of 50 to 60% compared to 2008. That will bring semiconductormanufacturing equipment spending levels down to what they were in the early 1990s," says Dan Tracy, senior director of industry research and statistics at SEMI, the overarching organization for the semiconductor industry. Physics for presidents
The Physics for Future Presidents lectures at UC Berkeley have gotten a lot of interest since they were posted on Google Videos. Professor Richard A. Muller covers some interesting topics in physics, stressing conceptual understanding rather than math, with applications to current events, including, for example, a Toyota commercial that includes a meteor hitting the earth. You can view the online lectures here.

High speed video cameras
Bob Sharp from Southern Vision Systems Inc. demonstrates a pair of digital cameras that capture high-speed video for industrial maintenance and troubleshooting. Run time, 8:03. Baldor engineers used one of these devices to debug a stamping machine. Check out the video they shot here.

New Products

Server for industrial use
The 3rd Generation iServer MicroServer has a 32-bit microprocessor based on ARM technology with 72-MHz speed. The iServer lets users put anything on a network without writing any codes. The device features 10/100 Ethernet, dynamic Web server, full IP stack, Modbus protocol support, e-mail notifications, SNMP traps, programmable I/Os, firmware upgrade over Ethernet, authentication, and access restrictions for security.
Three versions are available: An embedded MicroServer for OEM’s to network enable their products; an industrial MicroServer that mounts on a standard DIN rail; and a wall-mount MicroServer for most commercial and IT applications.

Tower lights use LEDs
The EZ-LIGHT TL50 Tower Lights display up to five colors in one tower and allow multiple colors to be lit simultaneously. Models with audible alerts are available for applications requiring sound indication.
The lights require less than 2 W of power and have a water and oiltight industrial housing for direct mounting to machines. Standoff pipe and adapters are available for elevated mounting.
Tower Lights include long-lasting, >100,000-hr LEDs for low-power consumption; provide 18 to 30-Vdc and 24-Vac supply voltage in one device; offer bimodal npn or pnp, depending on hookup; are compatible with PLC or other logic-level control outputs; and have prewired 2-m attached cable or Euro-style quick-disconnect, depending on model.

The Energy Efficiency Web Conference & Expo

Engineers saw and heard great educational content at the Energy Efficiency Web Conference and Expo. If you missed the live virtual event, don’t despair! An archive of the full day’s agenda is now available.

Design engineers are required to integrate energy efficiency into their designs while maintaining lower costs, the highest reliability or both. The editors of Machine Design understand these challenges and have developed this conference to help engineers understand the recently imposed energy mandates. The information presented at this educational event will help engineers compare the different technologies and product related to energy efficiency. Attendees will gain access to the technical information needed to help them make the best decisions without having to travel or take time away from current projects.
