A cable that handles 10k-g shocks
The Army’s Future Combat System fires guided 120-mm shells to over-the-horizon distances. Unfortunately the guidance and control hardware in the shells see 10,000 g’s of shock. To handle the situation, special StripMount cabling goes into the shell's wiring harness. Read more.

More on renewable energy economics
Our recent editorial on renewable energy economics is eliciting comments from readers. One says, "The sun will not deplete for a few more billion years and shares its energy globally without any pollution. As technology improves it will only cost us less to harvest and store renewable energy." Read the rest of this comment and responses here.

Video clip: How assault rifles are made
EngineeringTV recently visited Sabre Defence Industries, maker of AR-16 assault rifles and barrels for 50-cal machine guns. Marc Lowe, VP of Manufacturing describes the firm's production floor and explains the production process for assault weaponry. Click here to watch.

Cool video: Coanda effect UAV
When the Coanda effect is active, a fluid or gas stream will hug a convex contour when directed at a tangent to that surface. The principle can be used to, among other things, create thrust on hovering UAVs. You can see an example in this clip from the UK company Aesir. And you can read more about the coanda effect here.

New Products

High-pressure relief valve
The 375 high-pressure PRI relief valve is designed for applications with high backpressures up to 850 psig. The valve offers a range of cracking pressures for 3,000, 4,000 and 5,000-psi systems with system peak pressures up to 6,750 psi. The 20-gm relief valve features a durable tungsten-carbide ball and 440C CRES seat.

Liquid-tight fittings and flexible tubing
Heyco-Flex III liquid-tight fittings and flexible tubing is designed for quick, easy, and permanent assembly between the tubing and fittings. For use in both wet and dry applications, the products resist corrosion, oil, weak acids, and saltwater. The fittings and tubing are flame retardant, nontoxic, and UV resistant. The tubing doesn’t need threading for installation, which eliminates cutting the tubing and creating leak paths.
Made of nylon, the fittings and tubing are rated for Type 3R applications and provide maximum flexibility for use in tight quarters. Mounting brackets are available.

Now Available On-Demand
The Energy Efficiency Web Conference & Expo

Engineers saw and heard great educational content at the Energy Efficiency Web Conference and Expo. If you missed the live virtual event, don’t despair! An archive of the full day’s agenda is now available.

Design engineers are required to integrate energy efficiency into their designs while maintaining lower costs, the highest reliability or both. The editors of Machine Design understand these challenges and have developed this conference to help engineers understand the recently imposed energy mandates. The information presented at this educational event will help engineers compare the different technologies and product related to energy efficiency. Attendees will gain access to the technical information needed to help them make the best decisions without having to travel or take time away from current projects.

Visit the archive to:
  • View informative webinars on energy efficiency
  • Visit interactive booths where you can contact suppliers
  • Peruse the Resource Center where you can download or link to additional pertinent energy efficiency information

UPCOMING WEBCASTS

Optimizing Mechatronic Systems Using Simulation
Sponsored by The MathWorks
DATE: September 10th, 2009
TIME: 2:00pm ET/11am PT

Are you encountering integration errors in mechatronic systems late in development during hardware prototyping?
Simulating mechatronic systems in one environment that combines mechanical, electrical, and control system modeling makes it easier to find performance errors early in your development process. In addition, current simulation technology allows integration of engineering data from different CAE tools, such as CAD and EDA, reducing translation errors.

Attend this live webcast and learn how simulation can help you:

  • Build multidomain mechatronic system models
  • Predict and optimize system performance
  • Understand and manage complex system interactions
  • Detect design inefficiencies and integration errors during development
  • Verify and test mechatronic systems before building hardware prototypes
