Surprise! Some companies are hiring
engineers
Or to be precise, Tesla Motors is hiring engineers, at least a
couple of hundred of them. EngineeringTV caught up with Tesla at the
recent Detroit International Auto Show where Tesla was showing its new
prototype electric car and talked about the kinds of engineers it needs
to hire. See more

Design it right the first time with
Virtual Prototyping
Engineers and
scientists use virtual prototyping to design, optimize, validate, and
visualize their products digitally and evaluate different design
concepts before incurring the cost of physical prototypes. NI SoftMotion
for SolidWorks enables mechanical and control engineers to collaborate
and gives them a way to assess the operation of moving parts and
visualize realistic machine operations.

3D models come to the iPhone
As Apple introduces its electronic tablet to the world, now might be
a good time to consider the Autodesk Inventor Publisher Technology
Preview, a free download from Autodesk Labs, which supports the creation
of interactive 3D assembly instructions, operating procedures, repair
instructions, and the like. These can then be “published” to the
Web, paper documents such as Microsoft Word and PowerPoint — and the
iPhone. Read more

Revisited: Why Johnny can't do
algebra
One of our recent editorials discussed the problem of unqualified
math teachers who are unleashed on high school students. Philosopher of
biology Michael Ruse has also mused about the subject and done so far
more cogently than we did. One interesting quote from his piece: “In
2007 (the last year for which there are available figures) within the
State of Florida 1,295 people were hired to teach mathematics. Of those,
only 394 had qualifications in teaching mathematics. Within the state,
1,154 people were hired to teach science. Of these, 282 had science
qualifications." Read more

Too hot to touch? You need a wireless
thermometer
You can measure the temperature of objects that are moving,
difficult to get to, too hot to touch, or dangerous to approach with a
wireless IR thermometer. Because the battery-powered thermometer relies
on an IR sensor, operators must know the emissivity of the material they
want to measure. The manufacturer supplies a reference chart so they can
set the emissivity factor. There are a variety of models in this line
with temperature readings ranging from –10 to 1,600°F. Read more

Sensor features single cable
connection
A single cable connects two high-accuracy cylinder position sensors,
reducing connection points, wire costs, and installation time. The
BIM-UNT dual sensor detects long and short-stroke cylinders in stamping,
sorting, conveying, and other material-handling applications. The
single-cable design is beneficial in applications where multiple
cylinders are installed. The dual sensor’s sensitivity is useful for
detecting both the home and end positions of a piston during longer
stroke cycles.

Turbidity analyzer
The CE-compliant TRCN440 Series turbidity analyzers come in three
compact models. The TRCN441 is designed for medium to high turbidity
ranges. The TRCN442 targets low-turbidity ranges from 10 to 100 NTU,
such as those used in the beverage industry, mining, and water
treatment. For applications such as drinking water and pure water with
ultralow turbidity readings below 10 NTU, there’s the TRCN443 version.
The analyzers are lightweight with the NEMA-4X (IP67) and include local
indication, transmitter outputs, and control outputs.

Continuous-flex motor cables
A line of continuous-flex interconnect motor cables are harnessed in
accordance with manufacturers that include Siemens, Rexroth (formerly
Indramat), Fanuc, and Allen-Bradley. The cables, available for drive,
control, motor, and robotic functions, come equipped with different
cable connectors, including those with flying leads, adapter plugs, and
extensions.
