FREE FRICTION CD FROM GENERAL MAGNAPLATE

Reduce production downtime and minimize replacement costs by solving wear, corrosion, and release problems on metal parts with a FREE CD-ROM from General Magnaplate. The easy-to-use CD assists design engineers in selecting permanent coatings that prevent wear, friction, corrosion, sticking, galling, and chemical attack on ferrous and nonferrous metals. The CD is useful for comparing the static and kinetic coefficient of friction (COF) of numerous metals with 20 Magnaplate-applied 'synergistic' coatings.

A touch of Midas
A spray coating technique from Metall-FX in the U.K. can replace traditional gold leaf or provide the quality feel and durability of solid metals without the expense, weight, or inconvenience of machined or forged metal products. The spray process is available for precious metals, aluminum, brass, bronze, copper, iron, pewter, stainless steel, tin, and zinc, plus alloys of these metals.

Hollow but strong
Hollow containers for volatile liquids and solvents, paint, coolants, and brake fluid can now be made from a polyoxymethylene (POM) called Ultraform E3120 using extrusion blow molding. Containers made from POM reportedly have better barrier properties against gases such as oxygen, hydrogen, and carbon dioxide than those made from polyethylene (PE).

Epoxy withstands cryogenic temperatures
A two-component epoxy adhesive called EP29LPSP works at cryogenic (4K) temperatures. It also resists cryogenic shocks (i.e., ambient down to liquid helium temperatures in 5 to 10 min). The epoxy has a 100:65 mix ratio and cures at room temperature, but is best heat-cured at 130 to 165°F for 6 to 8 hr. EP29LPSP has a mixed viscosity of 400 cps and resists chemicals. It bonds to metals, glass, ceramics, and many plastics. When cured it has a 80 Shore D hardness, a tensile strength of 6.5 kpsi, a tensile modulus over 375 kpsi, a volume resistivity over 1015 Ω-cm, and a dielectric constant of 3.6. The optically clear adhesive comes in pint, quart, gallon, and 5-gallon kits, or syringe applicators.

Germ-buster thermoplastics
Kydex T MB, XD MB, 150 MB, and 5555 MB thermoplastic sheets feature Microban antimicrobial protection. The antimicobial additive is built-into the thermoplastic and doesn’t wash or wear off. It continuously fights microbe growth such as odor and stain causing bacteria, mold, and mildew. The sheets are candidates for for healthcare equipment enclosures and airline interior components.

Metallocene polyethylene films
Enable mPE, a metallocene polyethylene (mPE) felxible film, can replace complex LLDPE films that have thicker gauges. The mPE is a candidate for a range of applications including collation shrink, pallet shrink, cast stretch handwrap, heavy duty bags, and agricultural greenhouse and lamination films. The mPE has a broad, robust operating window on both LLDPE and LDPE equipment and can be extruded at lower melt temperatures for faster film processing.

Rev up your interdisciplinary design skills

What happens when a microcontroller turns on a power FET, sending a current pulse to a motor coil that develops a magnetic field which turns the rotor shaft, advancing a timing belt that drives a pair of nip rolls suspended on bearings in a web-processing operation on a form, fill, and seal machine installed on a potato chip line at a Frito Lay plant in central California? And how can you be sure that the encoders, prox sensors, and other feedback devices you plan to use will accurately see and report every relevant motion, machine state, and process condition? And will the signals get through the networks fast enough, without being corrupted, giving the controllers time to execute their algorithms as intended? It's a lot to think about, and it only scratches the surface of what many engineers grapple with today. If you happen to be one of them, then the place for you — where you can find answers and meet others with similar concerns — is www.Mechatronic-Design.com.

Backed by some of engineering's top information sources including Machine Design, Electronic Design, Motion System Design, and Power Electronics, Mechatronic-Design.com is the interdisciplinary engineer's desktop, toolbox, library, and lifeline in one easily accessible place.

Electroplating patent goes to Enthone
Enthone a business of Cookson Electronics, has patented its ViaForm Leveler copper damascene electroplating chemistry. ViaForm is exclusively marketed and distributed worldwide by ATMI Inc. ViaForm Leveler is reportedly the semiconductor industry’s first leveler that enables standard, three-part additive damascene plating. The leveler is said to improve the copper planarity across the wafer surface and reduce surface defects while improving yields.

Steel Metallurgy for the Non-Metallurgist
This book by John D. Verhoeven explains the metallurgy of steel and its heat treatment for non-metallurgists. It starts from simple concepts — beginning at the level of high-school chemistry classes — and builds to more complex concepts involved in heat treatment of most types of steel as well as cast iron. This book is the practical primer on steel metallurgy for those who heat, forge, or machine steel.

Big tungsten deal signed
The Plansee Group, Reutte, Austria, has agreed to purchase the Global Tungsten & Powders business unit from OSRAM GmbH, Munich, Germany, a Siemens company, for an undisclosed amount. GTP, which posted fiscal year 2007 sales of approximately 280 million euros (about $437 million), employs 1,050 people in plants in Towanda, Pa. and Bruntál, Czech Republic.
