Sometimes moving parts go into applications that just can’t risk
exposure to petroleum lubricants. Nobody wants grease in their corn
flakes, for example. Ditto for pharmaceuticals. Mechanical-carbon
materials contain self-lubricating graphite and are sometimes the only
way of handling such needs. Bonding fine graphite particles with a hard,
strong, amorphous carbon binder produces a mechanical- carbon material
that is called “carbon-graphite.”

Excessive pressures and temperatures, as well as fluid
incompatibility, have always spelled trouble for hydraulic cylinder
seals. And the problems promise to continue. Tighter emissions
regulations for mobile equipment, for instance, are leading to a new
generation of diesel engines that run hotter and will likely need
high-temperature catalytic oxidizers. That will subject hydraulics to
more heat.

For the past two decades high-tenacity fibers such as S-glass,
Aramid, and ultrahighmolecular- weight-polyethylene (UHMWPE) have been
the materials of choice for making lightweight armor. But today’s
soldiers, police officers, and other security forces now have a 10%
lighter helmet that far exceeds Advanced Combat Helmet (ACH) specs for
impacts. The helmets also meet all ballistic protection specs and
greatly reduce shock transference to the person they protect, says Bob
Miller, president of Diaphorm Technologies LLC, Salem, N.H.

The adhesives bond to special media or low-surface-energy
substrates, resist extreme temperatures, and remain flexible for radial
designs. The polyurethanes serve in applications such as cartridge
filters used in dust-collection systems or gas turbines. The hot melts
help improve equipment processing, produce quality filters, and
withstand the requirements of pleated filters in vacuum cleaners or
engines exposed to higher temperatures for extended periods.

The SolarScribe is said to handle all PV/FPD scribing applications.
The Series includes options such as mechanical or air bearings,
multihead scan axes, Z and theta correction axes, and machine
base/isolation systems. Fully digital architecture improves the current,
velocity, and position servoloops. Multiblock look-ahead reduces dynamic
errors while the position-based laser adjusts pulse frequency to match
scribing speed.

Rev up your interdisciplinary design skills
What happens when a microcontroller turns on a power FET, sending a
current pulse to a motor coil that develops a magnetic field which turns
the rotor shaft, advancing a timing belt that drives a pair of nip rolls
suspended on bearings in a web-processing operation on a form, fill, and
seal machine installed on a potato chip line at a Frito Lay plant in
central California? And how can you be sure that the encoders, prox
sensors, and other feedback devices you plan to use will accurately see
and report every relevant motion, machine state, and process condition?
And will the signals get through the networks fast enough, without being
corrupted, giving the controllers time to execute their algorithms as
intended? It's a lot to think about, and it only scratches the surface
of what many engineers grapple with today. If you happen to be one of
them, then the place for you — where you can find answers and meet
others with similar concerns — is www.Mechatronic-Design.com.

IDI Composites International, formulator and manufacturer of
thermoset molding compounds, recently received ISO 14001:2004
certification for environmental responsibility at its Lemont, Ill.
location, making it the fourth IDI Composites plant to receive this
certification along with IDI Composites’ Noblesville, Ind., Puerto
Rico, and United Kingdom facilities. ISO 14001:2004 specifies standards
for a company’s Environmental Management System. These standards
include both the environmental impact a company has on its surroundings
as well as the activities and products a company produces that interact
with the environment.
In 2007 IDI recycled nearly 2 tons of electronic equipment, more than
25,000 pounds of corrugated, 480 pounds of aluminum, 1,500 pounds of
plastic bottles, and 1,000 steel barrels, as well as reducing glass
usage. IDI has also implemented a closed-loop cooling system, which
allows the company to cool water in its BMC and SMC manufacturing
processes while keeping the water completely isolated from the outdoor
environment.
