Considering die casting to cut part weight and secondary operations?
The North American Die Casting Association (NADCA) wants to
help.
NADCA's Die Casting Design website has a series of free
video tutorials covering the issues designers must consider when
converting machined parts to castings, common alloys, and the casting of
basic geometries. Some sections of the tutorial are still in
development, but white papers, online design tools, NADCA standards, and
technical bulletins may be useful in the meantime. (Free registration
required, except for videos.)

Plane bearings are simple: Two surfaces moving against each other
without the aid of a rolling element. If there are no balls, needles,
retainers, or races, it’s a plane bearing. In addition to their
simplicity and low up-front cost, plane bearings can be made of resin
with added lubricants. During operation, the lubricants transfer onto
the metal mating surfaces.
Polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE), graphite, molybdenum disulfide (moly),
and silicone are commonly added to the resin to extend wear life by
lowering friction. Less friction means less heat and ultimately leads to
longer maintenance-free periods.

Fiat set visual appeal as a top priority for designers working on
both interior and exterior components of its new 500 model — launched
last year to commemorate the car’s 50th anniversary.
The three-door 500 is based on the Fiat’s Panda platform. Designers
didn’t disappoint — European journalists named it Car of the Year
for 2008. The eye-catching concepts come thanks in part to savvy
material selection. They include a large bumper with outstanding scratch
resistance, a Class-A smooth surface finish, and good
paintability.

EP30FL is a flexible, tough epoxy potting and encapsulation compound
for both thick and thin cross sections. It is 100% reactive and contains
no volatiles. The compound generates low exotherm and low shrinkage
during its quick room temperature cure. It bonds to similar and
dissimilar substrates. It can tolerate thermal cycling, mechanical
shock, vibration, and water resistant exposure. In its cured state, the
compound can serve as an electrical insulator. It comes in half pint,
pint, quart, gallon, and five gallon kits.

Rev up your interdisciplinary design skills
What happens when a microcontroller turns on a power FET, sending a
current pulse to a motor coil that develops a magnetic field which turns
the rotor shaft, advancing a timing belt that drives a pair of nip rolls
suspended on bearings in a web-processing operation on a form, fill, and
seal machine installed on a potato chip line at a Frito Lay plant in
central California? And how can you be sure that the encoders, prox
sensors, and other feedback devices you plan to use will accurately see
and report every relevant motion, machine state, and process condition?
And will the signals get through the networks fast enough, without being
corrupted, giving the controllers time to execute their algorithms as
intended? It's a lot to think about, and it only scratches the surface
of what many engineers grapple with today. If you happen to be one of
them, then the place for you — where you can find answers and meet
others with similar concerns — is www.Mechatronic-Design.com.
