Diversify yourself
Investment analysts tout diversification as a bulwark against financial storms. The advice applies to intellectual capital, too. Diversifying your knowledge base makes you a more valuable employee to your current or future boss or lets you branch out on your own.

Now is the time to dig out old textbooks, browse the Basics of Design Engineering at machinedesign.com, attend conferences, and take classes. And don't forget the free webinars and ebooks hosted by Machine Design. See below for upcoming offerings.

Have any courses or organizations helped make you indispensible? ASM International is one such organization, offering a slate of classes on metals-related topics. Share your self-investment ideas on the Machine Design forum.

Epoxy adhesives that hold their own
When you look out your airplane window in a few years, you may not see the familiar rows of rivets. Believe it or not, adhesive bonding has advanced to the point where it can compete with high-performance traditional fastening technologies. Adhesives can lighten structures and extend service life in aerospace, marine, electronic, and automotive applications.

Packaging goes back to nature
Remember when consumer pressure forced McDonalds to stop using CFCs in its take-out containers? Scrutiny of packaging and expectations of environmental responsibility hardly eased up since then. With the ozone hole on the mend, focus has turned to how packaging contributes to fossil fuel, energy, and landfill use. More environmentally friendly technologies that were previously too expensive to develop, like plastics made from corn, are looking more attractive in the face of higher oil prices.

Biocompatible ship ahoy
Tests of two high-performance pleasure craft from Campion Boats showcased a new use for a bio-based resin technology called Envirez. The two boats, Campion’s Chase1 550 and 600, use Envirez L 86300 T-25 resin in their hulls, liners, and decks. The line of resins is formulated with soybean oil and corn-derived ethanol.

Plastic Bearings
Iglide plastic plain bearings contain solid lubricants, so no oil or grease is required. This prevents environmental contamination. The lightweight bearings reduce the mass of vehicles and aircraft, cutting fuel consumption and carbon dioxide output. Plastic bearings have high chemical resistance, unlike metals which must be placed in environmentally unfriendly, high-energy zinc galvanizing baths to achieve the same effect.

Thin Flexible Heaters
The flexible heaters consist of etched-foil or wire-wound elements sandwiched between layers of flexible insulation with uniform or profiled heat patterns. Polyimide (Kapton) Thermofoil heaters fit in space and weight-limited applications and resist vacuum, oil, and chemicals. Thermal-Clear heaters with optical-grade polyester sheets provide heat without blocking light. Mica heaters have high wattage for fast warm-upt. All-polyimide heaters tolerate higher temperatures and watt densities.
Minco

Adhesive sealant
Loctite 5510 bonds and seals a variety of dissimilar substrates. It is a noncorrosive modified silane free of solvents, isocyanates, silicones, and polyvinyl chloride. The compound resists vibration, shock, impact, and moisture. When applied, it flows into gaps, bonding and sealing the joint. It cures tackfree in 24 hr at room temperature.

Rev up your interdisciplinary design skills

What happens when a microcontroller turns on a power FET, sending a current pulse to a motor coil that develops a magnetic field which turns the rotor shaft, advancing a timing belt that drives a pair of nip rolls suspended on bearings in a web-processing operation on a form, fill, and seal machine installed on a potato chip line at a Frito Lay plant in central California? And how can you be sure that the encoders, prox sensors, and other feedback devices you plan to use will accurately see and report every relevant motion, machine state, and process condition? And will the signals get through the networks fast enough, without being corrupted, giving the controllers time to execute their algorithms as intended? It's a lot to think about, and it only scratches the surface of what many engineers grapple with today. If you happen to be one of them, then the place for you — where you can find answers and meet others with similar concerns — is www.Mechatronic-Design.com.

Backed by some of engineering's top information sources including Machine Design, Electronic Design, Motion System Design, and Power Electronics, Mechatronic-Design.com is the interdisciplinary engineer's desktop, toolbox, library, and lifeline in one easily accessible place.
