FE update: Simulating plastics and drop and crash tests
If you want a crash simulation involving plastics to yield useful results, it is important to model the material behavior appropriately. The high strain rates have a significant effect on the properties and failure can be ductile or brittle in nature, depending on a number of factors And although the LS-Dyna solver is mentioned and used frequently, the ideas here are applicable to other FEA software as well.

Polymers are complex materials with mechanical properties that vary with stress level, time (rate), temperature, and other parameters. This means plastics perform in a nonlinear way that is not easily captured by conventional material models with roots in metals theory.

FREE FRICTION CD FROM GENERAL MAGNAPLATE

Increase the life of metal components with a FREE CD-ROM from General Magnaplate. The easy-to-use CD assists design engineers in selecting permanent coatings that prevent wear, friction, corrosion, sticking, galling, and chemical attack on ferrous and nonferrous metals. The CD resource compares the static and kinetic coefficient of friction (COF) of numerous metals with 20 Magnaplate-applied 'synergistic' coatings.
General Magnaplate's surface enhancements become an integral part of the metal providing permanent, superior performance.

Mastering metallic colors
My anodized-titanium card case is deep blue when I hold it normal to my line of vision. But rotating the case changes its color, eventually reaching a nice shade of violet. Why does the object change color? Anodized-aluminum parts, for example, look the same at any angle. The answer lies in the behavior of light and its interaction with the microscopic structure of anodized-aluminum or titanium surfaces.

Back to the future with copper brazing
Remember when copper, not aluminum, was commonly used in mobile air conditioning? In addition to being odor-prone, aluminum has lower thermal conductivity and strength than copper. Which begs the question: Why was it phased out over the past 30 years?

New Products

Teflon composite bearings
Minuteman Series Teflon composite bearings are self-aligning and self-lubricating. They have a low coefficient of friction, dampen vibration, and tolerate shock. They can be submerged, washed down with water, high-pressure steam, or chemicals, and operate in harsh abrasive-contaminated environments.

Closed or open-style configurations in 12 sizes from ¼ to 4-in. ID are available. The bearings have 100% contact with the shaft and will not score aluminum shafting.

Leakproof fluoropolymer fittings
Pureloc compression fittings, for mating fluoropolymer tubing, are made from virgin-grade, chemically inert PFA. They offer unrestricted flow, as well as lock and sealability.

The precision-made fittings consist of four parts — nut, gripper, ferrule, and body. The nut’s ridged surface makes it easy to tighten. The see-through body lets users check installation. Available styles include elbows, straight connectors, tees, and adapters. Sizes range from 1/8 to ¾ in.

Bushings and bearings
Graphalloy bushings and bearings can withstand temperature from cryogenic to 1,000°F and are dimensionally stable when submerged or under load — applications where oil, grease, and plastic fail. The components, made from a graphite/metal alloy (molten metal, graphite, and carbon), are self-lubricating, a key feature in applications where maintenance operations are infrequent or difficult.

Industry Update

High Performance Alloys gets ISO nod
High Performance Alloys, Inc., became certified to the ISO 9001:2000 Quality Management Systems standard November 2008. The certification was conferred after an audit by National Quality Assurance-USA (NQA-USA).

The company manufactures and distributes cobalt, stainless steel, and nickel-based alloys. The certification coincides with the company's 25th year in business.

PolyOne products comply with new product safety law
PolyOne, a manufacturer of specialty polymers, listed its products that will comply with the Consumer Products Safety Improvement Act (CPSIA). The law, expected to take effect in the U.S. February 10, 2009, bans some phthalates in toys and other children's products. The act will also ban the use of lead in any children’s product, a standard which RoHS-compliant materials already meet.

PolyOne's OnColor masterbatches for vinyl, Geon vinyls, Wilflex inks, alternative plasticizers, engineered thermoplastics, and rigid vinyl compounds are among the products that comply with the new regulation.
