Cryogenic tool conditioning: fact or frostbite?
Cryogenic processing — treating parts at –300°F or colder — benefits not only tool-and-die sets. It has quadrupled the life of lumber mills’ log-chipper knives, let automakers’ resistance-welding electrodes run six times longer, and improved metal guitar-string harmonics. Audiophiles who have returned to vintage sound equipment powered by vacuum tubes swear cryogenically processed vacuum tubes produce discernible sound-quality improvements.

FREE FRICTION CD FROM GENERAL MAGNAPLATE

Increase the life of metal components with a FREE CD-ROM from General Magnaplate. The easy-to-use CD assists design engineers in selecting permanent coatings that prevent wear, friction, corrosion, sticking, galling, and chemical attack on ferrous and nonferrous metals. The CD resource compares the static and kinetic coefficient of friction (COF) of numerous metals with 20 Magnaplate-applied 'synergistic' coatings.
General Magnaplate's surface enhancements become an integral part of the metal providing permanent, superior performance.

Award-winning powder metal designs
A steel manifold, lockset refractor, all-terrain-vehicle transmission parts, an air nozzle, and a fiber-optic connector all garnered honors in the 2009 Powder Metallurgy Design Excellence Awards Competition. The competition, sponsored by the Metal Powder Industries Federation (MPIF), covered five categories: automotive engines, hardware and appliances, lawn and garden and off-highway, hand tool and recreation, and electrical and electronic components.

Coming to an airplane drink cart near you: plastics
Airlines have long been removing nonessential weight from their airplanes to save on fuel expenses or add paying passengers. So it may be surprising that the trolleys carrying drinks, meals, and packets of pretzels or peanuts are made the same way they have been for years — out of aluminum.

AeroCat B.V., Tilburg, the Netherlands, a company that builds these trolleys, designed a totally new catering trolley made almost entirely of injection-molded and extruded plastic. The company partnered with Solvay Advanced Polymers, Alpharetta, Ga., plastics processor Bemis Manufacturing Co., Sheboygan Falls, Wis., and RFID expert Zetes Industries, Brussels.

The new trolleys are undergoing industry trials, and it is hoped they will earn European Aviation Safety Administration certification under a European Technical Standard Order. Once the design is approved, AeroCat plans to sell or lease trolleys to airlines as part of a total catering concept.

Thermal management epoxy
EP30BN two-part, boron-nitride epoxy adhesive helps with thermal management for aerospace, defense, and microelectronic assemblies. The epoxy's medium viscosity lets it flow in bonding, sealing, and potting applications.

It has a specific gravity of 1.1 and cures at room temperature or elevated temperatures. The epoxy works between -60 and 300°F. Its volume resistivity is over 10E14 ohm-cm, and it has a thermal conductivity of 24 BTU/hr/sq. ft./°F/in.

Hygienic sealing materials
Ethylene propylene diene monomer (EPDM) E7502, fluorocarbon (FKM) V8605, and FKM V8T41 sealing materials are for hygienic-design couplings. They have less than 10% volume swell in 21 common cleaning-in-process (CIP) media.

EPDM E7502 has high chemical resistance to polar solvents, steam, hot water, and alkaline cleaning fluids. FKM V8605 withstands high temperatures and contact with high-fat media such as edible oils or cosmetics. FKM V8T41 has hot-water and steam resistance up to 338°F. It also gives high performance in contact with dry and liquid products in the meat, poultry, dairy, pharmaceutical, and bioprocessing industries.

All three materials comply with FDA, 21 CFR177.2600, 3-A, USP Class VI, USP and DIN EN ISO 10993-5, and EC 1935/2004. Gaskets and O-Rings come in ISO 2852, DIN 11864, DIN 32676, and custom sizes.

Black-oxide coating
The mini BK-LC black-oxide coating line uses a dip-tank procedure to durably coat aluminum with one heated tank and no electrolytic current. Coating is acheived in about 30 min depending on the alloy.

The finish formed is smooth, black, tightly adherent, and 1.5 microns thick. The process works on all cast and wrought aluminum alloys. 2000 and 7000 series alloys may need additional surface preparation.

The kit contains seven 5-gal immersion tanks, covers, an immersion heater, and chemical products to operate for 2-6 months, depending on workloads. The line occupies about 20 sq. ft.

Industry Update

Dow opens film-development center
Dow Chemical Co., Midland, Mich. opened a Film Application Development Center in Freeport, Tex. The plant features a Hosokawa Alpine American 7–layer coextrusion (“coex”) blown-film line in addition to three multi and two mono-layer blown-film lines, two cast-film lines, one extrusion coating line, and associated fabricating and testing equipment. Polymer characterization laboratories, a sensory science laboratory featuring taste, odor and haptics testing capabilities, and pilot plants are also on site.

Dow customers can test out the company's resins using these capabilities before committing to a bulk purchase, or they can develop new and improved film structures for packaging and other applications. Company officials say the film-development center will give customers "same-day sample quantities of commercial grade films."

DSM Engineering Plastics hikes Akulon price
DSM Engineering Plastics, Evansville, Ind. is increasing prices for Akulon polyamide 6 base and and high-viscosity polymers by $0.10/lb. The change affects the polymers sold in North America and takes effect September 1, 2009. The company attributes the increase to raw-material price escalation.

In a press release, DSM said it "continues to pursue and implement cost savings initiatives targeted at absorbing the impact of the raw material escalation" but that it needed to pass some price increase onto customers to ensure its continued growth.
