Researchers use model to redesign
internal-combustion engine
|
Researchers at Purdue University have built the first model that tracks
engine performance from one combustion cycle to the next. One of its
first tasks will be analyzing an engine design that eliminates the
mechanism linking the crankshaft and camshaft, and controls the valves
independently. The valves would, therefore, be more finely tuned for
efficiently burning diesel, gasoline, and alternative fuels, since
piston movement would not restrict timing. The concept, known as
variable-valve actuation, could also handle homogeneous
chargecompression ignition (HCCI).

Machine tools, coordinate-measuring machines, palletizers, robots,
ship-to-shore cranes, and laboratory medical equipment are just some of
the applications for cable carriers. Cable carriers keep cables and
hoses on translating and rotating axis from tangling and exceeding
minimum bend radii. Carriers also help expel debris and prevent cable
and hose jackets from touching the machine itself. A cable carrier
consists of hinged plastic or metal links that articulate as a machine
axis moves. The most common carrier arrangement is horizontal and
unsupported. This configuration works well for short travel distances
and gives the longest possible service life.

Components for Drivelines: Mechanical
brakes
|
Brakes absorb energy and convert it to heat. Thus, prime concerns in
a brake are: 1. Generating a force capable of retarding a rotating
shaft. 2. Dissipating or absorbing the heat generated in the process.
Mechanical brakes all act by generating frictional forces as two
surfaces rub against each other.

More than 3,700 metric gears and related products are detailed in a
528-page catalog. The "Elements of Gear Technology" reference section
covers the principles of involute gearing, gear dimension calculations,
definition of back lash, plastic gear design, elements of gear accuracy,
principles of surface contact, methods of lubrication, and
noise-reduction methods. Product sections give detailed specifications
of available products. The products come in sizes from module 0.5
through module 10 in alloy steel, carbon steel, stainless steel, cast
iron, aluminum bronze, brass, cast bronze, nylon, and acetal.

The Series VV061-Cube manifold comes in 6-mm widths with three port
valves that can be used to operate small bore cylinders or as a pilot
valve to operate air operated valves. It combines valve, PCB, base, and
fittings as one unit for space saving. Valves have two voltage options:
24 or 12 Vdc. The 6-mm-width valve Series uses 0.55 W in standard
configuration and 0.23 W with power-saving circuit and has a response
time of 10 msec. The Cube manifold is available in four and eight
station configurations and comes with two types of pipe connections:
barb fitting to accept 4-mm OD tubing or 2-mm one-touch fitting. Valves
are available with two optional seal material FKM and HNBR and the whole
manifold complies with RoHS, CE, UL, and CSA standards. The standard
valve has a Cv of 0.004 (0 to 100 psi) and 0.008 in the low-pressure
version suitable from vacuum to 44 psi pressure. The Cube manifold is
available with 300, 600, or 1,000-mm connector-cables.
