Spring preloads double-nut
The Series 1510 miniature precision ball screw from (Steinmeyer Inc., Burlington, Mass., comes with a double nut preloaded by a spring between the two nuts. This compensates for torque variations due to inaccurately ground threads. It also compensates for wear over time, so the ball screw continuously delivers smooth motion with near-constant idling torque. The standard nut has a cylindrical body with an attaching thread.

Plain bearings shake a leg
New metal-polymer plain bearings helped solve a wear problem in precision joints that let patients relearn how to walk. The joints are part of a framework called an orthosis. Computer-controlled motors in the orthosis move the patient's hip and knee joints through walking motions on a treadmill. Engineers who developed the orthosis at Hocoma AG in Switzerland noted that bearings in the hip and knee joints were wearing out quickly. The original metal-polymer bearings were designed to run dry. But the lubricating polymer layer was wearing away, introducing too much play into the joints which are perpendicular to their rotation axis.

Components for Drivelines: Springs
Most mechanical-drive systems use springs and parts such as retaining clips and spring washers. Although relatively small and inexpensive, these components are often critical to the reliable performance of a drive system.

New Products

Flanged linear ball bushings
Flanged linear ball bushings now come in a self-lubricating version said to reduce the need for maintenance and extend life. Flanges may be round, square, or compact with predrilled mounting holes. Users can choose from 52100 bearing steel, with or without nickel plating, and 440C stainless steel. Other options include low-dust versions for clean-room applications and sealless versions. Operating temperatures from −4 to 248°F are tolerated depending on material of construction.

Quick-turnaround ball screws
Compact FA ball screws are now manufactured in the U.S. for delivery in one to two weeks. Sizes include 25-mm shaft diameters and smaller, and they can be ordered with an optional maintenancefree K1TM lubrication unit. A new Compact FA catalog outlines available sizes and part numbers.

Feed and idler rollers
Catalog D150 covers over 190 feed and idler rollers, as well as cam followers, frictiondrive wheels, and 99 new products. The rollers come in inch and metric sizes and feature 60 durometer urethane and neoprene rolling surfaces, high coefficient of friction, low compression set, and are readily installed on drive shafts.

Linear Analysis Training Class

Students will be shown demonstrations of how to set up, analyze, and investigate typical structures. Workshops let students put this new knowledge into practice. The important features of the FEMAP GUI are introduced and, at the same time the essentials of Nastran are explored. Industry Update

Hand tools get an extended reach thanks to motion cables
High-power density nut runners can now be 200 ft away from their controls without losing a signal, thanks to custom-made motion cables. Designers at Ingersoll-Rand were redesigning their QE Series of tools when they found that no standard cabling could support 200-ft runs without losing power or digital signals data. So IR eventually turned to cable maker Leoni Elocab Ltd. in Ontario to custom build cables for its tools. Leoni Elocab prototyped and te ste d a 12.9-mm cable for power and data.
