Hydrodynamic pressure bearings
The S99HDPM Series of hydrodynamic pressure bearings consist of seven bearings with IDs ranging from 1 to 6 mm and speeds of 6,000 to 20,000 rpm.
The bearings are formed by stacking "petal-shaped" laminated aluminum-silicon alloy plates. Housed in a stainless-steel case with a polyurea-thickened grease containing antioxidant and anticorrosion additives, the inner faces of the plates act as the bore of the assembled bearing. As the shaft rotates, fluid between the shaft guide and the shaft generates pressure as a result of this "squeeze effect" — a phenomenon of generating pressure to a lubricating membrane in a fluid lubrication when wall faces are close to each other.

Mini polymer bearings
Two new mini polymer bearings have been added to the igubal spherical-bearing family. The mini plain bearing requires minimal installation space. The self-aligning bearing is light and compact, requires no lubrication, is simple to install, and adapts to angular misalignments.
The bearings are housed in igumide G - a reinforced polymer. The internal spherical ball is constructed of iglide L280 polymer for minimum friction with the shaft.
The rotational, swiveling, and oscillating movements of the self-supporting shaft take place within the spherical cap, which has a dampening effect.

Parallel-shaft/helical-bevel gearboxes
The HDP parallel shaft and HDO right-angle heavy-duty gearboxes handle applications with torque ratings to 640,000 lb-in.
Designed using finite-element analysis and multibody simulations, the gearboxes feature structural rigidity and gear geometry for optimized load capacity and gear/bearing life. Structural simulations based on boundary-element-method analysis helped minimize noise and vibration levels.

Smart gearbox
The integration of torque and force sensors directly into servogear reducer housings lets users monitor mechanical loads, including torque, shear force, speed thermal load, wear, and backlash. This method, called the alphaIQ solution, allows for accurate measurement of torque, axial loading, and radial loading. All variables are displayed on a PC with included software. The technology can be added to any current motion-control system and can also be used to close the torque loop of a control system at the output. Machine life can be accurately measured by determining the loads and forces present at the drive mechanism.

Rev up your interdisciplinary design skills

What happens when a microcontroller turns on a power FET, sending a current pulse to a motor coil that develops a magnetic field which turns the rotor shaft, advancing a timing belt that drives a pair of nip rolls suspended on bearings in a web-processing operation on a form, fill, and seal machine installed on a potato chip line at a Frito Lay plant in central California? And how can you be sure that the encoders, prox sensors, and other feedback devices you plan to use will accurately see and report every relevant motion, machine state, and process condition? And will the signals get through the networks fast enough, without being corrupted, giving the controllers time to execute their algorithms as intended? It's a lot to think about, and it only scratches the surface of what many engineers grapple with today. If you happen to be one of them, then the place for you — where you can find answers and meet others with similar concerns — is www.Mechatronic-Design.com.

Backed by some of engineering's top information sources including Machine Design, Electronic Design, Motion System Design, and Power Electronics, Mechatronic-Design.com is the interdisciplinary engineer's desktop, toolbox, library, and lifeline in one easily accessible place.
