Making sure machines stop and lives are
saved
When disaster strikes on an assembly line or where ever powerful
machinery is in action, the first response should be to shut it down to
save lives and money. Here's the latest on the electrical E-Stops
workers and engineers have come to rely on.

Smooth, Strong & Precise
Actuation
The HepcoMotion®
PSD80 Profile Screw Driven Linear Actuator is a cost effective Z axis
solution for lighter load applications -- a compact, single or
multi-axis unit built on an aluminum beam. Carriage plates handle loads
to 500N and speeds to 1m/s. Lead screws available in right or left
handed threads and pitches of 4, 15, 25 and 70mm. Open or closed formats
available, as well as corrosion resistant and double acting versions.

Why Edge Welded Bellows?
BellowsTech, LLC,
precision edge welded bellows provide a hermetic, all-metal pressure
barrier and seal that flexes in multiple directions. They provide the
most flex in the smallest amount of space. Vacuum applications include
Valve Stem Seals, in which the bellows is used to seal a shaft
hermetically while allowing axial shaft movement. Edge welded bellows
are more cost effective and functional than either electron beam or
laser welded bellows in applications requiring high quality,
state-of-the-art micro fusion joining.

NASCAR goes into shock(s)
Shock absorbers for cars, even race cars, are hardly new. But they
could represent one of the last engineering areas left for NASCAR race
tams to exploit.

A gusher of goofy ideas for BP
Machine Design Editor Leland Teschler chronicles the outpouring of
questionable ideas citizens have sent to BP in hopes they might help
stop the spill in the Gulf. See what you think, then join the

Bearing protection ring
The AEGIS SGR bearing protection ring, from Electro Static
Technology, protects motor bearings from shaft currents induced by
adjustable-speed drives. The manufacturer claims that motors to 100
hp/75 kW, fitted with the ring, will not fail from electrical-bearing
fluting damage for the life of the motor. If electrically induced
fluting occurs, Electro Static will replace the motor bearings free of
charge.
The rings are specified by many HVAC, pump, and conveyor manufacturers
to mitigate adjustable-speed drive circulating currents and prolong
bearing life.

Gas springs
The AGS line of gas springs provides controlled motion of lids,
hoods, machine guards, and panels. The units feature a treated-steel
piston rod, precision steel body, and a low-friction bearing with a
grease chamber for very-low breakaway force.
Fixed force and adjustable models come with push and pull-type designs.
A wide variety of body diameters, forces, stroke lengths and end
fittings are available.

Harting
DATE: July 21st, 2010
TIME: 2:00pm ET/11:00am PT
Equipment installation problems can ruin your plans for the day, not to
mention creating delays, frustrations, and higher manpower costs. Yet
today's economy means any design change for cost improvement or
installation ease needs careful consideration.
Hardwiring equipment makes sense in certain applications, while the
modularity and quick hookups offered by adding connectors makes sense in
others. Maybe it's time for a change, but how? HARTING, a global
provider of cabled solutions and industrial connectivity, can provide
important insights into making the right choice.

Working with Adhesives and Low Surface Energy (LSE) Plastics
Harting
DATE: July 29th, 2010
TIME: 2:00pm ET/11:00am PT
Polypropylene (PP), polyethylene (PE) and other thermoplastic olefins
provide design engineers with low cost, durable, flexible, and heat,
moisture, and solvent resistant materials. As design engineers find new
uses for these materials they are encountering difficulties in bonding
with adhesives.
This webinar discusses ways to work with these “non-stick” materials
and using a new class of adhesives.
