Peculiar profits - engineering of a different kind
A couple days ago, Goldman Sachs — the investment-turned-banking firm that both received billions in Federal bailout money and paid only a few million in taxes last year — announced record profits of $3.4 billion for the second quarter of 2009. Because it's paid back $10 billion, the company is now also freed from government restrictions on executive pay. In short, Goldman Sachs execs will pocket bonuses from "success" due in part to the fall of competitors not extended bailout money.

In our world, that of technical design, engineers aim to create and improve designs that are useful to humanity and tools for a better world. I wish that we could say the same for the industry engineered by our financial systems.

As always, we welcome your comments.

Working with rack and pinion drives
Choosing the right rack and pinion drive depends on three main considerations — application parameters, required accuracy, and budget. Following are some expert tips and tactics to help you get it right the first time.

1. Take the time to size wisely. Match the quality level of the rack to the application: A soft rack for light loads and medium accuracy; a quenched and tempered rack for medium loads and medium accuracy ...

The Energy Efficiency Web Conference & Expo

Engineers saw and heard great educational content at the Energy Efficiency Web Conference and Expo. If you missed the live virtual event, don’t despair! An archive of the full day’s agenda is now available.

Design engineers are required to integrate energy efficiency into their designs while maintaining lower costs, the highest reliability or both. The editors of Machine Design understand these challenges and have developed this conference to help engineers understand the recently imposed energy mandates. The information presented at this educational event will help engineers compare the different technologies and product related to energy efficiency. Attendees will gain access to the technical information needed to help them make the best decisions without having to travel or take time away from current projects.
