Hot cocoa to warm December's chill is just the ticket while you curl up with the latest Motors Monthly newsletter. This month we look at installations that reduce cable congestion, new FEA software for motor design, and an XY-position table that uses an interesting stepper motor design. The featured video takes a look at what goes into rebuilding and rewinding electric motors. And our usual selection of new products help to make your job easier.

More Controllers, Fewer Cables
Precision-positioning applications often employ multiaxis-stage technology. A simple arrangement of mechanically stacked stages is a reasonable and economical installation. However, the downside is that cable management often becomes a problem. A way around the problem is to replace the central multiaxis controller with single, separate control modules, each mounted directly to an axis. A simple network connection than links and synchronizes all controllers.

Software Review: FEA for Electric Motors
A downside to FEA design is that building models can take a lot of time. Analytic software for motor design does not provide enough accuracy and precision. However, Opera Electrical Machines Environment is an application specific variant of a general-purpose electromagnetic FEA tool. It helped speed the building of models with ready-to-use templates for common motor types.

Novel Dual-Axis Linear Motor Gives XY-Base Fast Moves
A line of dual-axis linear motors from Baldor Electric Co., Fort Smith, Ark., the HoneyComb Series, uses a novel linear-stepper-motor design to drive an XY base. The motor comprises two parts, a forcer that generates motion and a base or platen that performs two-axis moves.

Rev up your interdisciplinary design skills

What happens when a microcontroller turns on a power FET, sending a current pulse to a motor coil that develops a magnetic field which turns the rotor shaft, advancing a timing belt that drives a pair of nip rolls suspended on bearings in a web-processing operation on a form, fill, and seal machine installed on a potato chip line at a Frito Lay plant in central California? And how can you be sure that the encoders, prox sensors, and other feedback devices you plan to use will accurately see and report every relevant motion, machine state, and process condition? And will the signals get through the networks fast enough, without being corrupted, giving the controllers time to execute their algorithms as intended? It's a lot to think about, and it only scratches the surface of what many engineers grapple with today. If you happen to be one of them, then the place for you — where you can find answers and meet others with similar concerns — is www.Mechatronic-Design.com.
