Punxsutawney Phil reports we still have 6 more weeks of winter heading our way, so it's time to curl up with the February edition of the Motors Monthly newsletter. This month focuses on selecting the right dc motor for the right location. Effective replacement of servo motors means knowing the inertia load of the system. It's possible to let the motor itself provide the data needed to calculate that value. And finally, a new torque motor design changes the game for these special-service devices. This month's video choice is the ERockIt, an electric motor bike you pedal to accelerate. And be sure to checkout the new machinedesign.com website with its growing volumes of articles, whitepapers, videos, and webinars for the engineer.

Articles

The right motor for the right place
Much has been written about the process of selecting motors for applications in motion control. Motor selection can be complicated. The decisions to be made include whether to employ brushless or brushed dc, or stepper motors. A fundamental understanding of the speed-torque curve is the key to specifying a dc motor that will do everything it needs to do.

BX4 Brushless motor with Four-Pole Power and reliable long service life

What can the Faulhaber BX4 Brushless motor with 4-pole technology do for your designs? From aerospace to robotics to medical applications, the BX4 can deliver power for a wide range of applications. Constructed with a modular design with fewer parts and no adhesive bonded joints. Continuous torque up to 12.2 mNm combined with the 22F series gearhead torque increases to 1,500 mNm. Click here for more info and video on the all new BX4 from Faulhaber.

Graphing load inertia using servomotors
The process of tuning a retrofit servodrive on older machines can be tedious work unless you know the load inertia of the system. The moment of inertia of the load is a key measure for sizing and tuning servomotors. But what if the design data is long lost or operating conditions have changed invalidating the original data? You're in luck. A sensor to measure load inertia is already in the machine -- the servomotor itself.

Torque motor gets a redesign
The TMK line of torque motors from ETEL, a Swiss firm, has 30% more torque (on average) and top speed has been increased by a factor of 3.5 compared to the design of traditional torque motors.

Video: ERockIT Electric Motor Bike
Is it a bicycle? Is it a motor bike? It's both! From Germany comes the ERockIt, an electric motor bike you pedal to make go. The faster you pedal, the faster the bike moves -- to a top speed of 80 km/hr (50 mph). Stefan Gulas, the inventor of the ErockIT, states, "The pedals act as a type of accelerator. So you don't have an accelerator on the handlebars but you have to pedal. And the quicker you pedal the faster the motor goes." Length: 1:50

Feb. 26 Webinar: Clutches and Brakes 101: Basics for Design Engineers
On February 26, 2009, Thomson, A Danaher Motion Company, is presenting a free educational webinar on clutches and brakes; the latest in a series of regular webinars on the application of linear motion technology from Thomson. Clutches and Brakes 101: Basics for Design Engineers is designed for engineers of all experience levels. Participants will receive practical information on the basics of clutches and brakes, learn about different features and technologies that are available, and examine various clutch and brake applications. Two sessions are available, Session A - 10:00 a.m. E.S.T. / 9:00 a.m. C.S.T. / 7:00 a.m. P.S.T; and session B - 3:00 p.m. E.S.T. / 2:00 p.m. C.S.T. / 12:00 noon P.S.T. Registration is required.

Energy Efficiency Web Conference & Expo –
May 14

Do you know you can get in-depth education on energy-efficiency and all the benefits of an in-person trade show without ever leaving your desk or spending a dime?
The intelligent use of energy is making headlines. Product designers and manufacturers are striving to deliver products that consume less power, extend battery life, generate less heat, or work from alternative energy sources. Our Energy Efficiency Web Conference and Expo will educate design engineers, product developers, and managers on how to make the best use of energy-efficient product innovations and devices, and on how to arrange them in systems to lower power consumption and stay "green." This special one-day event will include sessions on such areas as:
  • Power-efficient drive techniques for lighting
  • ROI for high-efficiency capital equipment
  • Energy monitoring and energy standards
  • Designing for SEMI S23 and the Energy Act of 2007
  • Working with alternative power and battery technology
Make plans now to attend the Energy Efficiency Web Conference and Expo. The event offers a full day of live webinars and interactive booths, along with a Resource Center where visitors can download or link to additional materials.
