We're almost through the first month of MACHINE DESIGN's The World's Smartest Design Engineer competition. You score points as you correctly answer engineering questions while competing against other engineers around the globe for fun, prizes, and the prestige of being The World's Smartest Design Engineer. Prizes are awarded monthly, so if you haven't started yet, April 1 kicks off a whole new round of competition. Sorry, but prior month winners are not eligible for the new round. But keep playing to boost your score for the yearly grand prize! Challenge your friends and colleagues to a grudge match! Remember, the monthly competition for The World's Smartest Design Engineer starts anew in April! In the meantime, keep reading Motors Monthly and MACHINE DESIGN magazine -- you'll never know where questions may come from! (Hint! Hint!)

Designing for No-Fail Couplings
When engineers select couplings with the capabilities, environmental resistance, and service parameters their applications demand and install and use them as designed, they can be confident the couplings will work reliably over their designed lifetimes. Unfortunately, ignoring one or more of these factors can cause premature coupling failure with results ranging from small inconveniences to serious financial loss and personal injury.

Stainless Steel Retaining Rings From Stock

Smalley has over 5,000 Spirolox® Retaining Rings in 302 and 316 stainless steel from stock in 1/4" to 16" diameters. Specials can manufactured from .200" to 90". Smalley’s manufacturing process allows for the economical production of stainless steel retaining rings. Spiral type retaining rings are interchangeable with standard snap ring grooves and have No Ears To Interfere® with the assembly. Free samples are available of stock parts to test in your application.

Purdue Researchers Invent Ferropaper, an Inexpensive Ferrous Material
Researchers at Purdue University, West Lafayette, Ind., impregnated a piece of ordinary paper with a mix of mineral oil and nanoparticles of iron oxide. The result, dubbed Ferropaper, can be moved using a magnetic field, possibly making it useful in speakers, tweezers capable of moving a single-cell, low-cost micromotors for surgical instruments, and other applications.

Turning to Advanced Seals for Better Performance
As rotating machines face more-demanding life, speed, temperature, and pressure requirements than ever before, standard seals made from conventional materials find it hard to keep up. Potentially damaging process fluids and gases further challenge seals. The result: high premature-failure rates in seals, machine breakdown, and escalating repair and warranty costs.

Bison 50th Anniversary Celebration
In celebration of its 50th Anniversary year, Bison Gear & Engineering Corp. is offering over 30 models of metric worm gear reducers for only $50 each. These hollow shaft right angle gearboxes are designed to mate to IEC standard motors in frame sizes from 50 to 80. Using hardened steel worms and forged bronze gears with reductions from 7:1 to 100:1, the lifetime lubricated gearboxes are rated for input powers from 1/20 to 2.25 hp (.04 to 1.67 kW), with continuous torque ratings up to 708 in.-lbs (80 N-m).

New Products

Energy-conserving heat-pump soft start
The RSBS Series single-phase plug-and-play soft start reduces the starting current of heat pumps used in residential installations. The soft start limits amperage demand, which peaks when single-phase scroll compressors of the type used in heat pumps start. Maintaining starting current below fixed limits lets the RSBS avoid high-energy tariffs.

DC Gearmotors for Battery-powered/Mobile Robotics

Midwest Motion Products provides solutions for 12, 24, 36, and 48 VDC equipment such as mobile robotics, AGVs, UGVs, fuel cells, and mobility/accessibility applications. See sample at www.midwestmotion.com. Gearmotor sizes range from 10- to 220-mm diameter, with output torque up to 4000 in.-lbs. Options include integral brakes, tachometers and encoders. The company also provides a variety of fully compatible servoamplifiers, and DC motor speed controls, many of which are IP-65-rated for use in harsh environments. DC linear actuators are also available from stock. See www.midwestmotion.com for further details.

Low-harmonic drives
The VLT low-harmonic drives ensure high-quality sine waves from the power-supply grid by actively imposing currents, as needed. The drives come in 132 to 630-kW high overload, 160 to 710-kW normal overload, and voltage range of 380 to 480 Vac, 50 to 60 Hz.

Nanopositioning stage
The SCR100 is an ultrahigh precision, single-axis stage that integrates a slide guide, encoder, and linear-shaft motor. The stage’s moving-magnet design, locates all cables and connectors in the stationary base. The resulting absence of any moving cable eliminates motion errors due to cable forces.
