Machine and robot builders recognize linear motor benefits, but some
are reluctant to integrate the components into designs — because of
incomplete understanding of the technology. Here we overcome that with a
review of basic linear motor integration.

Servomotors and stepmotors are candidates for incremental control
applications. Engineers should consider both types and determine which
gives the best competitive edge for a given machine. Often, the choice
comes down to accuracy.

Hydraulic motion-control systems ruled the flight simulation world
for more than 40 years. While there were attempts to create all-electric
systems, the results typically fell short in performance or the higher
investment needed to own the system deterred customers. So economical
all-electric motion-control systems for flight simulation are an
engineering breakthrough of sorts.

The Progressive Insurance Automotive X-Prize competition ended this
past fall with half the $10 million purse going to Mainstream Class
entrant Very Light Car #98 (VLC) from Edison2, Charlottesville, Va. Two
Alternative-Class winners, Wave II from Li-ion Motors Corp.,
Mooresville, N. C. and E-Tracer by the X-tracer team from Peraves,
Winterthur, Switzerland, split the remaining $5 million.
