Oil Dealer Opts for New Bitumen
Packaging
In a bid to cut costs and reduce environmental hazards, oil dealer
Kenol Kobil has opted to lose the drums and go for a new, cost-effective
packaging method for bitumen, a crude oil by-product used often in road
construction. Instead of the traditional (and sometimes hazardous) use
of discarded oil drums, bitumen will be transported in solid form in
something called a “BituBag.”

Leland Teschler's Editorial: Garbage In,
Methane Out
Since 1987, researchers at the University of Arizona have been
studying and analyzing the contents of 15 landfills nationwide. It turns
out that three notorious items in landfill lore (fast-food packaging,
diapers, and plastic grocery bags) constitute a barely noticeable
presence, while one of the biggest culprits of monopolizing landfill
space happens to be construction and demolition debris. Leland
Teschler’s editorial looks at the relationship between packaging and
dumpster diving.

MISUMI Announces Summer Technical Seminar
Misumi USA, Inc. has announced that it will conduct its
Configuration Technical Seminar in Cambridge, Ontario on July 15, 2008.
In addition, the seminar will be available as a Webinar CTS on August
19, and again as a hosted event in Chicago from September 23-25 as part
of the National Manufacturing Week trade show. These seminars are
designed to help engineers overcome the time and performance pressures
typically associated with custom machine builds. Registration is
available online.

The Insider Documentary: Packaging is
Rubbish
Mark Constantine, co-founder of Lush, a British cosmetic company,
offers a documentary featuring insight into the packaging industry, as
well as informing consumers of their power over it. Effects and costs of
packaging are also discussed, clearly and concisely. Parts two and three
of this documentary can be found here and here, respectively.

Bottom-load case packer
The state-of-the-art VCP-20 bottom-load case packer targets
applications requiring a small footprint and gentle product handling.
The unit is designed to pack cases ranging from 7 to 24-in. long and 4
to 18-in. wide. Servocontrolled motion provides smooth, accurate
handling and its small size suits low-rate applications of up to 20
cases/min, depending on case size and pack pattern.
As products reach the VCP-20, a servomechanism pushes it from the
conveyor to construct a pack pattern, which then loads into a waiting
case. Simultaneously, the VCP-20 selects and erects cases, folds, and
seals flaps. This servocontrolled motion is also used when handling both
flat and loaded cases. Case sealing can be with tape or hot-melt glue.
The VCP-20 can also be used in the food industry as a heavy wash-down
machine.

BL67 Ethernet Gateway
TURCK introduces
a new BL67 Ethernet gateway available for use on PROFINET network
systems. PROFINET is the fastest industrial Ethernet I/O network and the
only one that can successfully accomplish a line topology, making it
available for long conveyor systems. All BL67 systems use TURCK's
free I/Oassistant software package to perform the initial
configuration, parameter set-up, documentation, commissioning and
diagnostic functions for on/offline usage. The PROFINET BL67 gateway is
also completely compatible with TURCK's RFID system, BL
ident.

Plastic netting
Inexpensive plastic netting protects just about any product, even
during shipping. The inert polyethylene material resists abrasion,
withstands most chemicals and solvents, and comes in flat sheets for
layering or as sleeves to slip over an object. The netting comes in
three different strengths for a greater level of stretch and web
thickness. The company’s full line of netting is available in a
variety of colors. Common applications include protecting valuable
precision components like heavy-duty truck parts, roller bearing
assemblies, pistons, and heavy threaded fittings. Additional cylindrical
styles are available for applications such as wine bottles, gas
cylinders, oxygen tanks and more.

Rev up your interdisciplinary design skills
What happens when a microcontroller turns on a power FET, sending a
current pulse to a motor coil that develops a magnetic field which turns
the rotor shaft, advancing a timing belt that drives a pair of nip rolls
suspended on bearings in a web-processing operation on a form, fill, and
seal machine installed on a potato chip line at a Frito Lay plant in
central California? And how can you be sure that the encoders, prox
sensors, and other feedback devices you plan to use will accurately see
and report every relevant motion, machine state, and process condition?
And will the signals get through the networks fast enough, without being
corrupted, giving the controllers time to execute their algorithms as
intended? It's a lot to think about, and it only scratches the surface
of what many engineers grapple with today. If you happen to be one of
them, then the place for you — where you can find answers and meet
others with similar concerns — is www.Mechatronic-Design.com.
