Are you the world's smartest design
engineer?
|
Test your knowledge against that of other engineers when our Design
Engineering Group launches its new interactive, Internet-based game show
The World’s Smartest Design Engineer. The game will
have simple, average, and hard questions in categories including CAD,
electrical, mechanical, and motion control, among others. Win up to
$5,000 cash, or a Kindle, iPhone, or gift card. The game ends on
December 31, 2010. The grand prize winner will be announced in the
January 15th, 2011 issue of Machine Design. Game on, and good luck!

In 1999, Protomold (now a service of Proto Labs), Maple Plain, MN,
changed the face of plastic injection molding with a computerized
process that could turn a 3D CAD model into real injection molded parts
in five days. The process was faster than traditional molding and, for
quantities from a handful to several thousand, it cost less. This let
designers quickly get prototypes with all the properties of production
parts for early functional testing.

It's not easy for medical manufacturers to ensure their medical
devices are reliable. For example, upon examination, seemingly identical
lead wires in a random sample were found to have up to a 10X variation
in durability. How much of this variation is caused by the manufacturing
process and how much by differences in material or even residual
stresses induced when the wire is spooled? Trial-and-error testing
simply can't begin to solve such problems.

A new American Society for Quality (ASQ) survey asked medical device
manufacturers about industry trends and challenges, with 67% saying
healthcare legislation will have a negative impact on the industry in
the year ahead. Companies said the biggest challenge will be in
complying with FDA regulations. Other challanges cited included cutting
costs while maintaining quality and not knowing the effects of a
proposed innovation tax.
