AAMC Calls for Gift Ban, Tougher CME
Rules
By Tamar Hosansky
The Association of American Medical Colleges Task Force
on Industry Funding of Medical Education has issued a report
recommending that academic medical centers strengthen their policies
regarding relationships with pharmaceutical, medical device, and other
health industries in order to ensure an "effective and principled
partnership."
The 39-member task force, which was chaired by the former CEO of Merck
and included representatives from the pharmaceutical industry and
academic medical centers, worked for two years on the report. Of
particular interest to continuing medical education and healthcare
meeting professionals are the recommendations concerning gifts and
education.
Management of commercial support should be handled by one centralized
CME office within AMCs, says the report. In addition, CME offices should
develop audit mechanisms to ensure that their activities are in
compliance with the Accreditation Council for CME Standards for
Commercial Support. The task force also recommends that the AAMC
collaborate with the ACCME to create an external process for monitoring
CME activities, a move that could address the concern expressed in the
Senate Finance Committee's April 2007 CME report, which noted the lack
of such auditing as a weakness in the ACCME's oversight system.
Read more about the report, including the proposed gift
ban.

horizon, including a new APEX webinar for meeting planners and two live
seminars for CME professionals. Here’s a rundown.
How To Use APEX as SMMP Tool.
It's not enough to save your company or organization money, you've got
to measure and prove every bit of cost savings as well as cost and risk
avoidance. Learning how to use standardized forms and contract language
can help both planners and suppliers manage the planning process. Join a
senior panel of meeting professionals on May 21 at 2 p.m. EDT for a
webinar about using APEX--the Accepted
Practices Exchange initiative--as a tool in your strategic meetings
management program. This is the second webinar this year organized by
MeetingsNet in cooperation with the Convention Industry Council. To

The 8th Annual Continuing Medical Education Conference.
The theme for the conference, held June 12 to 13 in Philadelphia, is
“Successes in CME.” The program looks at strategies for success from
both an educational and management standpoint. For more information on
the meeting, which is organized by the Center for Business Intelligence,
go to the conference
web site.
The Alliance for CME’s 2008 CME Basics Institute.
This intensive day-and-a-half program focuses on the fundamentals of
CME. The conference, held June 19 to 20 in Rosemont, Ill., is targeted
to newcomers to the field of CME and those who want to sharpen their
skills. It combines didactic lectures, breakout sessions,
question/answer periods, and case studies; and emphasizes adult-learning
