House Introduces Version of Sunshine Act
A new bill introduced in Congress would require pharmaceutical and medical device companies to disclose any payments or gifts made to physicians.

The Physician Payments Sunshine Act of 2008 (H.R. 5605) was introduced by Rep. Peter DeFazio (D-Ore.) on March 13. It is the House equivalent of a similar bill introduced in the U.S. Senate last September. The House bill applies to all companies with annual revenues over $1 million, while the Senate bill covers only those with more than $100 million in annual revenue.

At the start of each quarter, drug and medical device companies must report any payment or “transfer of value” over $25 made to physicians--either directly or through a third party. Read more about the bill.

Medical Meeting Management
Slow Growth for Medical Meetings in 2007
By Dave Kovaleski
The medical sector of the exhibition industry had its slowest growth in at least seven years in 2007, with revenues actually declining, according to the latest CEIR Index, published by the Center for Exhibition Industry Research, Dallas.

The medical sector—the largest in the industry, representing 23 percent of all exhibitions—was essentially flat last year, growing just 0.2 percent. By comparison, the overall exhibition industry grew 3.2 percent in 2007.

MM Coverage Cited in Blogs
The March/April issue of Medical Meetings got some attention in the blogosphere, including a mention in The Carlat Psychiatry Blog, published by Dan Carlat, MD, a Newburyport, Mass.-based psychiatrist who is also editor of the The Carlat Psychiatry Report.

Carlat, who advocates for eliminating commercial support from continuing medical education, spotlights MM Editor Tamar Hosansky’s editorial titled "Fast-Track CME Reform" in which she writes about the need for the CME community to initiate change. Carlat also blogs about contributor Donna Beales’ article called "5 Steps to Building Real Firewalls." Beales, MLIS, librarian/CME coordinator at Lowell General Hospital, Lowell, Mass., writes about strategies to keep commercial bias out of CME.

Also, at the Compassion Forum, held April 13 in Grantham, Pa., presidential candidates Sen. Barack Obama (D-Ill.) and Sen. Hillary Clinton (D-NY) each cited the success of President Bush’s program to fight AIDS in Africa, called PEPFAR--the President’s Emergency Plan for AIDS Relief. Medical Meetings explored in depth the major challenges that went into planning the 2007 PEPFAR meeting in Rwanda.
