Video Interview: Down Economy Hits Pharma Meetings
The hottest topics in the pharmaceutical meetings industry are how the economy and the newly updated PhRMA Code on Interactions with Healthcare Professionals are influencing business. We asked four meeting managers for their perspective during a video interview, held in July in New York.

“The economy is having a significant impact on pharmaceutical meetings,” said Terri Breining, CMP, CMM, founder and president, Concepts Worldwide Inc., Carlsbad, Calif. "Meetings are one of the first areas cut in tough economic times. We've seen some of our clients forgo live meetings for electronic meetings. But electronic meetings will not replace live meetings—although that is the knee-jerk reaction. Live meetings are always much more impactful. Although we will see some dip in the number of live meetings, and we’ll see shorter meetings, we've been through this cycle before and we will come out the other side."

The Case for Security: Traveling With Laptops Just Got Easier
By Michael Bassett
The airport security process just got a little easier for laptop-laden travelers. A new Transportation Security Agency regulation, which went into effect last Saturday, allows passengers to leave their laptop computers in “checkpoint-friendly” cases when going through security lines.

Click here for an explanation of what constitutes “checkpoint friendly” and a list of a few suppliers who already have the TSA-approved bags available.

Who Should Manage E-Meetings? Attend One and See.
Web meetings are on the rise. The question is: Should meeting managers be the ones to organize them?

On July 31, we held a live webinar, now archived here, on exactly that topic, and asked: “As travel costs increase, do you expect your company to convert a percentage of its face-to-face meetings to virtual meetings?” More than half (53 percent) answered “yes” or “likely,” 26 percent said “somewhat likely”—and only 6 percent said "no." They were all attending the webinar to learn from Debi Scholar, CMP, CMM, CTE,
director of meeting and event services at PricewaterhouseCoopers, and Timothy Stark,
director of online events at Penton Media, about how they have transformed some of their company’s meetings into online events, and, in Debi’s case, taken a proactive role in sourcing and managing them.
