Don't Doom Your VNA With The Wrong Cables

A coaxial cable that fails the phase-stability test can be deadly to the accuracy of a microwave vector network analyzer (VNA). Many suppliers offer coaxial cables for VNA measurements, promising excellent phase and amplitude stability, but the proof is in the measurements. The latest line of cables characterized by outstanding phase stability is the Phase Critical product line from Times Microwave Systems, which are usable to 30 GHz and also exhibit low insertion loss. Transistors Or Tubes For Satcom?

Tubes have their places in the audiophile world, although for sheer output power, they can’t stand with transistors at audio frequencies. But at RF/microwave frequencies, in applications such as for satellite communications (satcom) systems, it is another story altogether. Tubes such the traveling-wave tubes (TWTs) used in traveling-wave-tube amplifiers (TWTAs) are unmatched for their clean, linear output power across satcom channel bandwidths. Speedy Synths Save On Test Budgets

Most engineers faced with generating fast-switching (as in 0.5-ms) microwave test signals through 9 GHz with low phase noise will probably think of a five-figure price tag. But to have such frequency synthesizers available for less than a ride-on mower brings new meaning to the phrase “affordable microwave test equipment.” The reason for the high performance at low cost is due to these test signal sources being designed and manufactured by a newcomer to the industry, Pronghorn Solutions. And although they measure only 7.0 x 2.2 x 5.0 in., these synthesizers provide full-sized performance in terms of spectral purity and provide as much as +10 dBm output power through 6 GHz.
