Accessories are always big at NAMM and 07 has plenty to offer with a
very cool little accessory from MXL
coming out in March that will let you plug any mic, dynamic or
condenser, into a computer's USB port. M-Audio has three new shoulder bags,
one for the Microtrack that will let you hook up an external mic and
leave the recorder out of harm's way. Speaking of which, Sony has a new attachment for
the PCM-D1 that will let you use any mic with the mighty-mite of
portable recorders. Downstairs in the NAMM "dungeon," a company Percussa debuted its AudioCubes
infrared MIDI controllers. The hand-sized cubes connect to a computer
via USB and send MIDI commands according to how their four infrared
beams connect to each other. Speaking of connections, of the old-school
type, Neutrik showed the new Crimp XLR; no solder, no wire stripping.
Squeeze and pierce, and the connection is gas tight. --Mix

CELEBS ABOUND While resting my weary dogs in the Mix
booth, I met Bob Clearmountain, saw Ronnie James Dio stroll by, watched
CC Deville and Yngvie Malmstein sign autographs in the Dean Markley
booth across the hall, and heard David Pack sing "You're the biggest
part of me" for Open Labs three booths away. Today is nuts and it's only
Friday! Tomorrow should be an extravaganza of NAMM madness with more
gear, more people and of course more SPLs. --Kevin Becka
THE SYNTH GODS BESTOW THOR TO PROPELLERHEADS
REASON Propellerheads did not show a new version of Reason,
however, I did get a sneak peak at a new Reason synth that will come out
in the next version. It's called Thor, and it's a semimodular soft synth
that lets you combine virtual analog, FM and wavetable synthesis with
infinite routing possibilities and a built-in step sequencer. Thor's
hammer of justice will crush you with booming bass! --Markkus
