Editors' First Take
The Buzz From the Floor
Under sunny skies and unseasonably warm shirtsleeve weather, Winter NAMM 2009 opened to an economically cautious, yet enthusiastic, audience. Clearly, attendance was well below the record-setting crowds of previous years, although foot traffic, particularly in the high-tech "A Hall," was surprisingly brisk. And, overall, the theme seemed to be "value," as many new-product debuts catered to the end-user seeking gear slanted to the low-cost/max-performance approach. A few of examples of this direction include JBL's new LSR2300 studio monitor line, offering the Linear Spatial Reference criteria of the award-winning LSR6300 and LSR4300 Series, although priced from $249/each; and TC Electronic's $3,495 PowerCore 6000, which provides the algorithms of its flagship System 6000, but at a fraction of the price.
New Products
Blue Microphones Bottle Rocket Stage One, Stage Two
Blue Microphones announced that the Bottle Rocket Stage One ($899, MSRP) solid-state microphone system and the Bottle Rocket Stage Two ($1,999) tube microphone system are now shipping. The Stage One Bottle Rocket is a transformerless, solid-state microphone system that is fully compatible with the Bottle Caps, the same interchangeable capsule system used with Blue’s Bottle mic. It comes with Blue’s B8 capsule and a custom shock-mount and wood storage box. The Stage Two Bottle Rocket is a transformerless tube microphone with a warmth and character all its own. Like the Stage One, the Stage Two is also fully compatible with the Bottle Caps. Stage Two comes with Blue’s B8 capsule and a custom shock-mount, high-definition 5-conductor tube mic cable, Blue’s Powerstream power supply and an ATA-style flight case. To celebrate the launch of the Bottle Rocket Series, the first 25 Bottle Rocket Stage Twos will feature a limited-edition lustrous “stardust” paint finish, and include a second capsule—the B6 Bottle Cap—as well as a signed letter of authenticity from Skipper Wise, president/founder of Blue Microphones.
