Amidst constant doom and gloom in the general news of the world,
NAMM 2009 opened in Anaheim, California to a refreshingly upbeat
attitude and a surprising amount of exciting announcements, including
new software from Ableton, MOTU, FXpansion and IK Multimedia; new
hardware from Native Instruments, Akai, Vestax, Allen & Heath; and much
more. Particularly exciting for laptop musicians and producers,
Universal Audio debuted the UAD-2 Solo/Laptop, an ExpressCard version of
its recently introduced UAD-2 Solo DSP plug-in host card for computer
PCIe slots. The UAD-2 Solo/Laptop features all the DSP power of the
UAD-2 Solo at the same price--$499 MAP--and it includes UA plug-ins such
as the 1176SE compresser/limiter, Pultec EQP-1A EQ, RealVerb Pro Room
Modeler and the CS-1 channel strip. Not only is the UAD-2 Solo Laptop
2.5x more powerful than UA's previous ExpressCard solution, the UAD
Xpander, but the UAD-2 Solo/Laptop is also much smaller. While the UAD
Xpander was the size of an external hard drive and required an AC power
connection, the UAD-2 Solo Laptop is not much bigger than a USB dongle
and requires no power adapter, giving mobile producers extreme
portability and convenience. —Markkus Rovito, Remix
Bling's the Thing at NAMM 2009 At any tradeshow, there
always seems to be a trend in products, ranging from the resurgence in
ribbon technologies to plug-ins for live consoles. NAMM had a bit of
that, from Royer Labs' new active stereo ribbon mic, to Waves'
announcement that it was creating a new division to create plugs for
sound reinforcement applications. But the REAL trend at NAMM was bling.
Just about everywhere we looked there seemed to be guitars with flashing
LEDs in the bodies and necks. And pro audio wasn't immune to this
either. Neutrik showed its new CrystalCon XLR and 1/4-inch connectors,
with rhinestones inset into the metal bodies; Sennheiser unveiled
interchangeable mic "skins" that pull over wireless mic bodies for a new
multicolored look; beyerdynamic's M(y) 88 now offers its classic M88
vocal mics in custom finishes; and Audix demoed versions of some of its
popular mics in stylish camo schemes ranging from desert tan to hot
pink. None of this is essential to production, but at it can certainly
take our minds off the economy and let us have a bit of fun in the
meantime. —George Petersen, Mix

The C 214 is a cost-effective alternative to the C 414 and is capable of
handling the rigors of high-pressure sound, such as amplified guitars,
with sensitivity geared for voice and orchestral instruments. The C 214
boasts a high dynamic range and features a low-cut switch enabling
operation in low phantom-power voltages from 12 to 48 volts. Additional
features include 156dB SPL capability, an integrated suspension,
double-mesh grille and high RF immunity. The circuitry in the C 214
provides maximum SPL capability with minimum noise, and the XLR-type
output connector offers loss-free signals. Accompanying a pair of C
214s, the Stereo Set includes spider-type shock-mounts, stand adapters,
windscreens and a stereo pair certificate for authenticity. Booth #7800,

Peavey PR 15D, PR 12D
Peavey has updated the PR Series powered loudspeakers with its new
Class-D amplifier topology for even lighter weight on the new PR 15D and
PR 12D models. These models are two-way powered loudspeaker systems
engineered with a bi-amplified Class-D power section that drives a
12-inch woofer with 150 watts continuous and a 1.4-inch
titanium-diaphragm RX 14 compression driver with another 50W continuous.
The PR 15D and PR 12D are capable of up to 120dB peak SPL and feature
Peavey’s DDT speaker protection. A built-in, heavy-duty crossover
increases reliability at high power levels. A Woofer Servo monitors the
woofer for back-EMF that is not a result of the drive signal and
compensates for the unwanted woofer response in the overall signal. A
Constant Loudness (Fletcher-Munson) circuit accentuates bass and treble
frequencies at low listening volume levels to provide additional clarity
and uniform sound reproduction across the volume spectrum. Booth #5740,
