Welcome back to the city that never sleeps! New York City is once again
hosting the AES Convention (October 9 to 12, 2009). It’s been two
years since audio pros trampled through the streets of N.Y,, attending
the convention, hailing a taxi, dining at a great restaurant or taking
in the sights.
Each year, we offer our "AES Audio Products Guide," where you can
find the latest products that will be debuting—or showcased—at the
show. The New Products Guide is now live!
Start poking
around now!
EDITORS' NOTE: AES 2009 started out with a bang on a day
that's usually reserved for those who aren't busy working on local
projects. Perhaps that says more about the state of production than
anything, but the good news is the floor was packed out of the gate.
Despite the show being reduced to eight rows of exhibitors,
manufacturers were upbeat with a lot of new products to show. Chris
Estes had a new version of his CLASP technology that now works with Pro Tools HD
(www.endlessanalog.com). Independent Audio was showing a working model
of the Coles stereo mic we saw at NAB. The Vintage King booth was
showing a wide range of new 500 Series modules including a Shadow Hills
double-wide stereo compressor. Eben Grace showed me its new M501 500 Series mic
preamp and M103 channel strip, which offers a preamp, 3-band EQ and
optical compressor. And that's just two of the 500 Series modules we
saw, showing that the format is wildly popular. We got a sneak preview
of the new TLM 102 mic from Neumann that takes 143dB SPL and occupies a small
form-factor. Mackie is
now shipping the Pro Tools M-Powered 8 driver for its Onyx line of
consoles.
All this new gear bodes well for the next two days because we have
barely put a dent in the festivities. Stay tuned. —The

Gefen DisplayPort These new products offer easy ways of
integrating different formats, extending high-resolution displays and
accessing multiple computers from the same workstation. The "DVI to
Mini-DisplayPort Converter" allows PC and Mac users to connect a new
Apple flat-panel display using Mini-DisplayPort to their laptop or
computer's DVI port; it supports high resolutions to 1920x1200, and
offers a pixe-to-pixel signal conversion. The 2x1 DisplayPort KVM
Switcher connects two computers using DisplayPort connectivity to one
display with complete KVM (keyboard, video, mouse) access and control.
This KVM switcher supports high-speed USB 2 peripherals, analog audio
and delivers resolutions up to 2560x1600. Available in lengths of 75,
100, 150, 210 and 330 feet, the DisplayPort Extreme Extender fiber-optic
cables come with DisplayPort connectivity on both ends. Each cable
offers a plug-and-play method of extending high-resolution displays over
a single cable, with an impeccable pixel-by-pixel video delivery. No
additional power is needed to deliver resolutions to 2560x1600 in either
single or dual-link mode. Find out more information about the

iZotope Alloy This new audio plug-in combines six
sound-shaping tools into one integrated interface. Alloy ($249 MSRP) is
designed for any audio mixing application from professional recording
and post-production studios to the home studio, and features a
configurable interface. Alloy includes six modules: Equalizer, Exciter,
Transient, Dynamics, De-Esser, Exciter and Limiter. More than 150
“MacroPresets” combine Alloy’s modules into custom configurations
for specific mixing situations, and each preset has a custom Macro
layout showing the user useful controls for the task at hand. Advanced
users can build their own layouts and move modules around in the signal
chain to customize the plug-in. Alloy is designed to complement Ozone;
Ozone customers can find their discount codes for Alloy by logging into
into their accounts at the iZotope site. More

Neumann TLM 102 The reduced overall size unites all of the
typical design components of a Neumann microphone. In the interior is a
newly developed large-diaphragm capsule (cardioid) with a maximum sound
pressure level of 144 dB, which permits the recording of percussion,
drums, amps and other very loud sound sources. However the most
important applications are for vocals and speech; a slight boost above 6
kHz provides excellent presence of the voice in the overall mix. The TLM
102 is available in black and nickel, with a standmount, at a price of
around 600 euros (less than $900 U.S.). Find out more information about the TLM 102. AES

Lectrosonics' DM Series of audio processors have been selected to
provide auto-mixing technology for the technical program panel
discussions during AES. Five Lectrosonics DM812 digital automatic matrix
mixers—one for each of the five different rooms where the panel
discussions are to take place—will be inserted in-line between the
microphones and mixing console. In addition to their ability to auto-mix
up to eight channels, the DM812 processors offer a means of increasing
gain before feedback. Further, as the systems are designed for
unattended operation, their inclusion during the panel discussions
requires only minimal oversight, thus freeing the house A/V technicians
to focus on more pressing issues. Find out more about the DM Series.
Phil Ramone to Deliver Richard C. Heyser
Lecture Multi-Grammy Award–winning producer Phil Ramone will
deliver the Richard C. Heyser Lecture at the 127th AES Convention on
Sunday, October 11, 7:15 p.m. to 9 p.m. at the Special Events Hall.
Entitled “Technology and Music Meet Again,” Ramone’s presentation
will focus on the continuing partnership that technology and music have
enjoyed throughout the years. In reviewing the evolution of the
recording industry, Ramone will illustrate how technological innovations
have revolutionized the musical experience for the fan, and the
production process for the producer, engineer and artist. Ramone will
also address the issue of how the exponential pace of technology has
lead to the industry’s current state of chaos.
