RECORDING TIPS from the pros

Trina Shoemaker on engineering Blues Traveler’s Bridge: "John [Popper] sings loud. I squeeze vocals. I know a lot of people don’t; I just do. I just squeeze ‘em to death. It sounds good and why not? We’re competing with rock ‘n’ roll elements, so you have to treat it like a rock ‘n’ roll element. And a voice needs to be treated like a kick drum, where all of his sounds need to be compressed into an area that will fit in the song, but always be present." MORE

Monitor engineer Chris Gilpin talks about using in-ear monitors (IEMs) on Tool’s latest tour: "The other guys talked about trying in-ears. But to be honest, I can’t really imagine a situation where they [members of Tool] would be happy. And it’s certainly not a criticism of anyone, but they are audio purists, and they definitely want it to sound a certain way. It’s been a long road to get it to the point where they can say, ‘Yes, that’s the way I want it to sound.’ It was a constant battle [though Europe] up until the point where I stepped up to floor wedges and gave them all the headroom they needed."
