Recording Tip from George Petersen Recording Tip: Digital Crossfades In DAWs and MDMs, digital crossfades can make your punch-in/outs, edits and splices as seamless as possible. The digital crossfade concept is like using an angled splice -- as opposed to a straight cut -- to edit two pieces of analog tape: The longer the splice, the longer the crossfade. Short crossfades are better with material where the audio on both sides of the punch is similar, particularly on highly transient sounds, such as percussion. Longer crossfades are best for material where the audio on both sides of the punch is dissimilar. A few moments choosing different crossfade times (and/or slopes) is time well-spent. -- George Petersen |
