MIX AT NAB
News From the Showfloor, Day 1
We've been coming to the NAB Convention for more than 20 years now and can't ever remember it being this packed on opening day. It was shoulder to shoulder everywhere in the South Hall, and with the audio companies moving back to the North Hall, it was packed there as well. This is definitely the year for HD, which sounds odd, but when you consider that they've been showing HD gear for 15 years, this is the year it's finally fully realized. Nothing like a February 2009 deadline to get people buying. Sony was touting its one-stop, right-now initiative. Avid/Digidesign was pushing its full product range across every imaginable market. And Apple got a lot of early Sunday morning buzz with its much anticipated release of the new Final Cut Pro suite that includes Soundtrack Pro 2.

We'll have a lot more product news and themes tomorrow, but for now, what hit us this time around is how much Vegas is becoming a music destination. Celine Dion is here, Elton John, Prince, plus the regular host of Barry Manilow types. And there will be more. This morning, we got a tour of the Palms' studio and new live venue complex, The Pearl, an $80 million, 2,500-capacity premier showplace built just for music. No jugglers, no fire eaters, no multipurpose. Just music. Evanescence opened the place in March. Saturday night we're going to stop in and see Gwen Stefani. Both artists and concertgoers are going to love this place.

Tune in tomorrow for a full report from Day 2, and in the meantime, be sure to check out our blog.

ABALTAT MUSE
Not a search engine with a large database of library music or music loops, Abaltat Muse is a video-driven soundtrack composer. The software actually composes music to already edited pictures, so re-editing video due to copyright/clearance issues or "best fit" will be a thing of the past. It can also give a first draft of a composition so the editor has a guide track, which can be updated and/or recomposed at any stage during or after the edit. NAB booth: SL7424.
