FEATURE STORY
NAB 2009 Show Report
NAB 2009 had a lot of the old feel from years past and some new things you’d expect from a down economy. For instance, the usual craziness of the South Lower hall was in evidence again this year with packed booths and lots of buzz around the more glitzy video-oriented demos and gear. Some audio companies—Tascam, Smartsound, MOTU, Fairlight, Samson and others—were spread throughout the SL hall basking in the overflow. Upstairs in SU it was less busy but still not as sleepy as the North and Central halls across East Desert Inn Road. Over there, traffic was down considerably, some estimating as much as 40 percent.

More than one vendor flatly chose to stay home. For example, Yamaha’s booth was flanked by two empty spaces left vacant by exhibitors who backed out at the last minute, choosing to lose their deposits rather than spend the extra it would take to bring their goods and staff to Las Vegas.

On the upside, hotels were blowing out rooms, with many attendees taking advantage of the bargain rates, while the airport, monorail and cab lines seemed lighter than usual. However, most manufacturers seemed unfazed by the economic situation, as there was no shortage of new gear debuts, most stressing cost-saving solutions for broadcast and post users.

NEW PRODUCTS
JBL LSR2300 Series Studio Monitors
At NAB 2009, JBL Professional introduced its LSR2300 Series Studio Monitors for the broadcast market. The LSR2300 Series includes the LSR2328P Bi-Amplified 203 mm (8-inch) Studio Monitor with 165 watts of amplification; the LSR2325P Bi-Amplified 133 mm (5-inch) Studio Monitor with 90 W of amplification; and the LSR2310SP Powered 254 mm (10-inch) Studio Subwoofer with an integrated 180W power amplifier.

In developing the LSR2300 Series, JBL applied the same stringent Linear Spatial Reference criteria used in the design of the acclaimed LSR6300 and the LSR4300 Series widely used in broadcast control rooms. JBL's LSR criteria requires 70 measurements, yielding more than 1,200 times more data than a single on-axis measurement of the speaker's performance. Read more.

THIS WEEK'S PRODUCT REVIEW
Mini Review: Tsound Productions Duet Breakout
The Apogee Duet provides a great way to get in and out of Apple's Logic Pro, GarageBand and iTunes software using Apogee’s world-class converters. The only downside to the product is the shoddy, confusing and generally tangled mass of cables provided by the manufacturer (see Mix’s Apogee Duet review in the July 2008 issue). However, as a potential work-around, Tsound Productions’ new Duet Breakout box offers an easy, affordable solution for getting in and out of the Apogee Duet, letting you bypass the original snake supplied by Apogee. Producer, Engineer Greg Ladanyi On Using ATC Monitors
Los Angeles–based producer/engineer Greg Ladanyi (pictured)—well known for his work with Jackson Browne, Fleetwood Mac, Don Henley and Toto—installed a pair of ATC (Acoustic Transducer Company) SCM50ASL Pro active three-way monitors in his studio at Maple Jam Music Group. The one-room facility focuses on pre-production, tracking and mixing for the group's roster of artists, which include Anna Vissi, Type O Negative, and Hollywood Undead. Read more.
BLAIR'S DVD WATCH
Blair's DVD Watch: Snapshots of Jazz Great Wayne Shorter
Wayne Shorter: Live at Montreux 1996 (Eagle Vision)
Really, with a player as great as tenor and soprano sax giant Wayne Shorter, you could carve out a few songs from just about any concert by any group he’s been involved in and you’re going to witness sublime musicianship. He is, in my opinion, the greatest living saxophonist, and this DVD, which features Shorter playing with three different groups at the Montreux Jazz Festival in 1991, ’92 and ’96, shows his amazing range as a player, composer and bandleader. (A different Montreux DVD showcases his work with Weather Report, still his most famous association outside of his time with Miles Davis.) Read more.
COOL SPINS
Blair Jackson's Pick of the Week
What a delightful surprise this album is! Toussaint, of course, is well known as a songwriter, producer and arranger, but he’s also made his share of cool solo albums—most notably, Life, Love and Faith from 1972, and Southern Nights from 1975. Nevertheless, this new, mainly instrumental, album has to be considered a departure for him, as it is comprised completely of pieces by other writers; his role is primarily as piano virtuoso and bandleader—two tasks he’s definitely suited for. Producer Joe Henry enlisted some his favorite players (a few of whom are also part of T Bone Burnett’s stable) and it’s a helluva band... Read more.

The entire device is flexible and twistable, and features three removable display "sticks" that can be snapped on to a music instrument or a performer to capture live sound. Read more.

Campus Music Businesses Grow
As a Loyola student, College of Music technology coordinator Jay Crutti imagined students running their own businesses while utilizing Loyola’s resources and using classroom education in real life situations. Crutti later realized this dream when he and music industry professor John Snyder started a series of businesses, or entrepreneurial units, in 2005, and Loyola donated used equipment, computers, office space and donations to them. The businesses are meant to function as services that anyone—students or companies—can hire and offer student rates as a policy. Read more.

Recording Studio Receives Okay in Reidsville, N.C.
The Reidsville City Council voted at its Tuesday night meeting to allow a recording studio to open in downtown Reidsville. The council’s 4-2 vote in favor of the text amendment allowing music production and recording in the “central business, general business and highway business districts” came despite protests from downtown merchants during the public hearing. “I just don’t think downtown is the best place for it,” said Jeff White, who owns Samples & More and White on White Accessories in downtown Reidsville with his wife Debbie. “We feel like there needs to be more retail downtown rather than studios and offices that don’t bring foot traffic.” Read more.
