Sound
Supervisor Jacob Smith On Using Sanken Lavalier Mics
Sound supervisor Jacob Smith (pictured) employed Sanken's COS-11D
lavalier microphones for a new eight-part History Channel
reality/documentary series, Expedition Africa: Stanley &
Livingstone, which re-creates Henry Morton Stanley's perilous
19th-century search for Dr. David Livingstone, and involves an arduous
970-mile journey through unforgiving rainforests and desert terrain.
Adrenaline Films contracted Smith for the Mark Burnett
Production. Superb audio was recorded by sound mixers Rian Engelen
(South Africa), Mark Krupka (Canada), David Tofler (Australia) and
Michael St. Hilaire (U.S.).
"It was brutal," Smith explains. "We had torrential downpours, hot
dusty deserts, and even a sea journey in primitive wooden boats. There
were unrelenting microphone damage risks, but the Sanken lavs worked
flawlessly. We had 11 Sankens for the journey equipped with Lectrasonic
MM-400 waterproof transmitters. We never had any humidity
problemsthe mics were even doused with water a few times but they
came right back to life. We had a few other brands of mics as backup but
they did not hold up under these conditions at all.
"To re-create this journey we had to have complete concealment of the
mics. The vertical design of the mic capsules allowed us to use a rubber
band around a Rycote softee and hide it in the clothing in a way that
there was no clothing noise, even with quick-dry synthetic fabrics."

Beck Cites
Beatles, Dylan as Inspiration for 'Velvet Underground' Cover
Album
The impetus for Beck’s latest projecta
track-by-track cover of the 1967 recording The Velvet Underground &
Nicowas the desire to get together with friends, play music
they enjoyed and see if they could cut an entire album in a single day.
“It all began with an experiment to see what we could do in one
day,” he told me when he called last night from his home in Los
Angeles. “I was reading how the Beatles or Dylan maybe it was
Meet the Beatleswould record one track at 9, another at 10,
then 11 and then there’d be a lunch break and then they’d do the
rest of the album in the afternoon.” Read the entire story.
Reggaeton Fever Shakes Up Cuba's Culture
To record his next hit, El Micha, one of the rising stars of Cuba's
reggaeton music blending reggae, Latin and electronic rhythms, just has
to knock on his neighbor's door. A microphone plugged into an old
computer in an apartment in Havana's working-class suburb of Reparto
Electrico serves as the studio where some of Cuba's most successful
reggaeton songs are recorded. "Reggaeton is unstoppable because it is
recorded at home. It is totally independent," says Michael "El Micha"
Sierra, 27, a former basketball player whose bottom row of gold teeth
flash when he gives one of his frequent broad smiles. With little
official support or air time on state-controlled radio, the songs Cuban
reggaeton artists record in makeshift studios lined with egg cartons for
sound insulation are mostly transmitted though homemade CDs and on
computer flash memory sticks. Read the entire story.
