X2 XDR-955
Digital Handheld Wireless Mic
Debuting at NAMM is the long-awaited XDR-955 from X2, a new
high-technology company based in Northern California. The "new" part is
somewhat misleading, mainly because founder Guy Coker has been designing
digital wireless systems since the 1990s.
The first handheld wireless mic system to use X2's digital conversion
and proprietary dual-digital RF transmission technology, the XDR-955 is
2009-compliant, meaning that it's free from DTV and FCC licensing
concerns and can roam anywhere throughout North and South Americas
without issue. Operating in the upper UHF bands at an RF carrier
frequency of 902 MHz to 928 MHz, the system carries a 118dB dynamic
range spec.
The XDH4 handheld transmitter ships standard with the Audix OM3
capsule and prices start at $999, with rackmounting hardware and
front-mount antenna kit. Availability is set for the first quarter of
2008.

Mauricio
Vilar
Front-of-house engineer and chief engineer for Bogota, Columbia--based
live sound company C. Vilar Ltda., Mauricio Vilar specs UltraSone
PROline 750 and HFI-550 headphones for recentt ours with Alex Campos,
Mauricio Y Palo de Agua and Ilona:
I call my approach "O.A.D.": Obsessive Attention to Detail. I care a
lot about everything, right down to what strings the guitar player is
using. I feel I have to operate the best gear on the planet. UltraSone
headphones allow me to hear something different: a more open stereo
image in a very reliable, road-worthy package. My job is very
challenging because I often have to do a 10-minute soundcheck and have
it sound like a CD; this is what clients expect. Recently, I had maybe
30 minutes to do a soundcheck for a major Columbian artist, but there
was also a U.S.O. -- Unidentified Sounding Object -- in there! I asked
the system engineer to please turn off the P.A., and I started doing a
quick soundcheck on my UltraSone PROline 750 headphones. After two
songs, I pulled up on the master fader and got a very happy look from
the artist's manager. This technique works very well for many FOH
situations. Why soundcheck a big Latin band with 48 line array speakers
on? It's much more efficient to make a balanced mix on your headphones,
and then if something is wrong with the sound, you know you have to work
with the system settings, not your mix.

To Clap or Not To Clap? Okay, we know this doesn't apply at
rock shows. But when is it appropriate to applaud at a classical
