AES 2009
Wrap-Up
Given the state of the global economy, perhaps the real
miracle about the 127th AES was that it happened at all. Sure, this show
was scaled down from past years, with no demo rooms and most exhibitors
taking much smaller booth spaces. But the spirit of innovation was alive
and well at AES. Read the show report.

Sensaphonics Opens Custom Shop
Sensaphonics Opens Custom Shop
The Custom Shop, headed by sound engineering consultant Thom “Sound
Guy” Fiegle, offers modifications to the 3-D Active Ambient™ IEM
system, a custom in-ear system with embedded microphones to allow
musicians to hear and control the level of the sounds around them with
both earphones in place. The new Custom Shop mods, hand-wired on the 3D
mixer/amplifier’s circuit board, extend this functionality further.
Available options include a record output, the 3D-RO and a special
modification for users with unilateral hearing loss, the 3D-CROS. Read more of this article.

Bill Keown
of Black Magic Audio
Black Magic Audio managing director Bill Keown on
providing monitor system for the Alternative Stage at this year's Leeds
Festival
The equipment set up for the stage was somewhat complicated, but [Allen
& Heath] iLive [console at monitor world] is so versatile we knew it
would cope with the responsibility. The FOH console was bused through
iLive so that when the live bands had finished each night, we could
simply switch off and case up the FOH console and mix the later DJ and
MC acts from the side stage on iLive and not have to worry about flying
beer. We maximized iLive’s I/O capacity and it didn't have any
problems handling the task. On Sunday night, we had five bands with
short, 15-minute changeovers, but iLive’s intuitive surface layout
meant we could easily manage the demanding schedule and had compliments
all round from the artists.

From Civic
Center to Hi-Lo, Sound Engineers Are Whipping Boys, Unsung
Heroes
Whenever the stage lights go up and the band walks on
stage, all glory goes to the musicians when the show goes off without a
hitch. But when things go haywire, all eyes are directed to the man or
woman behind the mixer. Read more of this article.
U2 Sets Stage for OU Concert The concept first wasdeveloped
in the last days of the band’s previous string of arena dates, said
Jake Berry, tour production manager for the tour. "We were all sitting
down at the load-in just before the last show, and I was there with
Willie Williams, who is the art director, the lighting designer and the
show designer, and Bono came in for the last sound check and said to the
two of us, ‘Can we play a show in the round?’” Berry said during a
Saturday tour of the stage construction. "And we looked at each other
and told him, ‘You can do anything you want.’” Read more of this article.
