Mix AES S.F. Survival Guide
|
WHILE YOU'RE
HERE...take a Booth Break
Even the editors admit it: After the 47th logarithmic-crossfade demo,
the eyes glaze over. If your dogs are barkin' and you're overdue for
some fresh air, check out these mini-getaways, a stone's throw from the
convention center. Want more ideas? Head to our Survival Guide
How's My Football Team Doing? Fourth Streeet Bar & Deli:
East Coasters, don't forget that your football games start at 10 a.m.
out here on the Left Coast. Right near the Convention Center, at the
corner of Fourth and Mission, are more than 20 TVs, showing all the
games. Great beer selection, though you may want to start with a Bloody
Mary. If you stay for the 1 o'clock game and skip the last afternoon of
the show, try the cheeseburger and fries.
Lunch With Warhol The San Francisco Museum of Modern Art, with its sleek,
imposing brick façade and cylindrical tower looming over Moscone,
houses not only a full scope of world-class contemporary art, but a hip,
classy café offering surprisingly good, eclectic fare. And no
admission ticket required. They'll even make you a take-out box if you
give them 48 hours' warning -- but then you wouldn't be tempted to bail
on booth duty and take in an exhibit or two...
Wine-o-Matic I've always been a beer girl. Even after 14
years in the wine Mecca of Northern California, I haven't entirely
caught on to the whole "swirl, sniff, sip" culture. That is, until I
checked out Vinovenue, a hip wine "automat" just down the block
from Moscone. The concept is novel: Insert your prepaid "tasting card"
into one of the sleek, high-tech tasting stations, choose from one of
the more than 100 featured wines, push a button and like magic, a sample
is dispensed into your glass. You can evaluate the wine yourself, or if
you're like me, consult with the ever-knowledgeable staff. Single-ounce
pours range from cabs in the $1 range to rare vintages that can top $40
a sip. Steep -- but hey, when's the last time you got someone to share
their '97 Chateau D'Yquem? If you find something you like, sidle over to
the cozy bar and try a full glass, or pick up a bottle to go. 686
Mission Street at Third.
Wholesale Flower Mart Peruse various flowers...pick some up
for the booth. Those who watched your shift may be more forgiving that
you "ducked out" a little longer than expected if you come back with a
beautiful bouquet! And what better way to make your booth "blossom."
Open to the public from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. At Brannan and 6th; www.sfflmart.com
