Welcome to Summer NAMM 2007!
Every July for as long as almost anyone can remember, the National Association of Music Merchandisers has hosted the Summer NAMM Show. For years it was held in Chicago and occasionally in cities such as New Orleans and Atlanta, and eventually it settled down for an 11-year stint in Nashville, Tennessee. Then NAMM announced that the summer show had outgrown the Nashville venue and moved the 2005 show to Indianapolis, followed in 2006 by Austin, Texas, self-proclaimed live music capital of the world.

This year Summer NAMM returns to Austin, where musicians, instrument makers, hardware manufacturers, software developers, music store employees, and other audio gearheads will gather for three days to see and learn about the latest products for musicians. Along the way, there will be lots of schmoozing, ranging from press conferences, sales pitches, and casual conversations to dinners, parties, and artist performances.

Summer NAMM is a lot smaller and more relaxed than its winter counterpart held every January in Anaheim, with fewer companies displaying their wares and only a fraction as many attendees. Consequently, the demands on our staff are more modest; Markkus Rovito and I will be the only editors in attendance from the Penton Audio Group, representing Electronic Musician, Remix, Mix, and Music Education Technology.

Crate Profiler 5
Proving that good things do come in small packages, Crate's new Profiler 5 is a 5-watt stereo combo guitar amplifier with an impressive feature set that belies its diminutive size. The Profiler 5's rear-panel USB connector allows musicians to interface directly with a Mac or PC and record using Mackie's Tracktion 2 music-production software, which is included. Less than eight inches tall and six pounds in weight, the rugged little Profiler 5 has two 4-inch speakers and an integral carrying handle. It uses microprocessor-controlled analog tone shaping to accurately emulate 11 vintage and modern amplifiers, which are selectable using a rotary pot on the top panel. Another knob provides a choice of onboard stereo DSP effects, while delay, reverb, and tone controls each have their own dedicated pots. Gain and master volume knobs, a 440 Hz tone generator, an on/off switch with power LED, and 1/4-inch input jack complete the amplifier's top-panel features. The Crate Profiler 5 has a retail price of $209.99, with an expected street price of $159.99.
