The editors of Mix are happy to announce that Peter Cooper has

be seen out playing bass for singer/songwriter Todd Snider.
Cooper's first column for Mix appears in our March issue, in
which he reveals a few more details about his own career and then digs
into one of the biggest projects to come out of Nashville in recent
months: Vince Gill's Grammy-nominated, multidisc/multigenre album
These Days. Check out "Skyline" in our March "Coast to Coast"
section, and find out how Gill and producer/engineers Justin Niebank and

The
Guitar/Bass Delay Trick
When recording bass guitarcombining a direct box
with a miked amplifier a time delay occurs, because the direct box
signal arrives sooner than the signal going through the amp, out of the
speaker and into the mic. Summing these usually results in a muddy
sound. Adding a slight delay (a couple milliseconds or so) to the direct
box signal improves the sound immensely, making it full and powerful.
The same technique can be applied to guitar tracks, but using two guitar
mics one right in front of the amp, the other 15 feet away in the
back of the room. Apply a 15ms delay to the close-mic track, and the
result is a massive sound where the room reverb of the ambient mic
occurs simultaneously with the sharp attack of the close mic. Guitarists
love this one!

Live Earth:The Concerts for a Climate in Crisis (Warner
Bros.)
Somewhere between the perhaps bloated claims of organizers that some two
billion people on seven continents watched last year's Live Earth
concerts and the downright preposterous anti-ecology naysayers who
attest that the total audience was just you, three of your friends and
Aunt Mabelwho was passing through the media room at the
timelies the truth about how successful this massive
consciousness-raising effort last July 7 was. MORE.
