The
readers always write
By Glenn Bischoff
June 6, 2008
It’s always fun to hear from our readers, and over the last few weeks
I’ve been having more fun than usual, as readers weighed in heavily on
two recent columns.
In one, I wrote that the FCC should reconsider the deadline it imposed
on Sprint Nextel to vacate its interleaved channels in the 800 MHz band
by June 26 because public-safety licensees are not yet in a position to
migrate to these channels and Sprint needs them to continue its
operations until it can move to the channels vacated by public safety. I
argued that enforcing what is now a premature migration would create an
undue burden for the already beleaguered carrier.
In the other column, I suggested that Congress needs to rethink its
priorities because, while it has been able to find billions of dollars
to explore Mars in the hope of discovering whether the planet ever
hosted Martians—and NASA plans to spend billions, perhaps trillions,
more—it can’t seem to see the wisdom of creating the funding
mechanism needed to build the nationwide broadband wireless network for
first responders that would help to keep Earthlings safer.

The Department of Homeland Security’s Federal
Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) announced last week that it would
perform the unified aggregator/gateway role for the fledgling Commercial
Mobile Alert System (CMAS) after all. The system, mandated by the
Warning, Alert and Response Network (WARN) Act, would provide the
framework for commercial wireless carriers to send text alerts to their
customers during emergencies.

The WiMAX industry had been holding its collective
breath, waiting for the first big deployment of 802.16e — the mobile
WiMAX standard anticipated to usher in a new, open broadband Internet
model. But it was able to exhale last month when Sprint Nextel announced
a blockbuster deal with fellow WiMAX operator Clearwire to form a new
company that will leverage a $3.2 billion investment from the likes of
Intel, Google, Comcast, Time Warner Cable, Bright House Networks and
Trilogy Equity Partners. The deal has revived WiMAX's prospects both in
North America and around the world.
