New ATRI research identifies locations with high truck rollover risk
The American Transportation Research Institute (ATRI) just released findings from the first phase of a three-part research effort aimed at mitigating costly large truck rollovers. ATRI’s first phase produced a database of locations with the highest frequency of large truck rollovers using over 50,000 crash records from a nine-year period.

Petroplex developing multi-modal liquid terminal in St James LA
Petroplex International LLC, a development company of bulk liquid storage tank terminals based in Baton Rouge LA, along with a consortium consisting of Macquarie Group, through its Macquarie Capital division, Quanta Services Inc and individual investor Harley Franco, CEO and founder of Harley Marine Services Inc, announced that it has raised capital to progress the development of a $600 million multi-modal bulk liquid terminal in St James Parish LA, with a projected initial storage capacity of four to six million barrels.

FTR Shippers Conditions Index steadies in March, capacity still shrinking
FTR Associates’ Shippers Conditions Index (SCI) for March showed little change from the previous month. The index currently stands at -5.3, representing a moderately unfavorable condition that is expected to persist until the onset of the busy fall shipping season.

Preliminary Class 8 orders continue decline
FTR Associates has released preliminary data showing April 2012 Class 8 truck total net orders at 16,877 units, the lowest number since September 2010 and 55% below the same month a year ago.

Diesel price down 5.3 cents
Diesel fuel’s national average price decreased 5.3 cents to $4.004 a gallon, according to US Department of Energy information.

Diesel is now 5.7 cents below the same week in 2011.

The Midwest had the biggest decrease (6.5 cents), followed by the East Coast (5.4 cents).

People
DR UWE FRANKE has been invited to join the advisory board of Hoyer GmbH. Franke spent most of his career at BP Europa SE, where he held various positions until his retirement and most recently was chairman of the firm’s executive board.

The National Association of Chemical Distributors (NACD) announced that JOSEPH "JOE" M STANTON will join the association as vice-president for legislative affairs. Stanton spent the past seven years at the National Association of Home Builders (NAHB), where he was chief lobbyist and senior vice-president responsible for government affairs.

MAC Trailer has added MARTY VOGT to its team as national aftermarket tank parts manager. A career tank industry professional, he has served in sales and management positions for more than 30 years.

DEAN VICHA has been named president of NationaLease, the full-service truck leasing organization. Most recently, he served as vice-president, national accounts.

Meritor Inc has appointed CHRIS VILLAVARAYAN vice-president, Global Manufacturing and Supply Chain Management, Commercial Truck. He previously was general manager, Operations Planning & Strategy. CHRIS SNODGRASS has been named vice-president, Axles & Drivelines, Commercial Truck, North America. Previously, he was vice-president, Global Manufacturing and Supply Chain Management. JOE PLOMIN has been appointed vice-president, Global Brakes, Commercial Truck after serving most recently as vice-president, Truck Americas. These appointments all take effect June 1.
