Wetlines
legislation markup set for Nov. 5
Markup of the wetlines legislation will begin Thursday, November 5,
according to officials on the House of Representatives Transportation
and Infrastructure Committee. This is one of the last opportunities for
the tank truck industry to promote changes to make the legislation more
tolerable.

Cap-and-trade
will do little to cut emissions, ATA warns
Proposed cap-and-trade legislation will impose significant costs on
the trucking industry and all consumers while doing little to reduce
carbon emissions from trucking, American Trucking Associations (ATA)
First Vice-Chairman Barbara Windsor said at a press conference on
Capitol Hill.
ATA
urges improvement in border infrastructure
Improving security and efficiency of freight transportation across
borders will require more funds for infrastructure, more reasonable
enforcement of trade security program rules, and giving the lead role in
coordinating federal efforts to the Department of Homeland Security
(DHS) and its Customs and Border Protection (CBP) agency, Celadon Group
Inc Chairman and Chief Executive Officer Stephen Russell told a
congressional panel.

Bendix
supports NHTSA findings on value of ESC
Bendix Commercial Vehicle System LLC supports the conclusions of a
study released by the federal government showing that Electronic
Stability Control (ESC), also known as Electronic Stability Program
(ESP), on heavy trucks (above 10,000 lbs) can both substantially reduce
the number of annual heavy-truck crashes and prevent injuries and
deaths.
Meridian
offers five ways to leverage cash and profit
In December, Meridian will be offering five specialized programs to
leverage credit, acquisitions (aspects of both buying and selling),
sales management, sales training, and truck efficiency so owners and
their staff can participate and benefit from the appropriate selection.
Mack
receives more orders from Army
Mack Trucks Inc has received three additional delivery orders for
Mack Vision Elite model tractors from the US Army TACOM Life Cycle
Management Command. The orders are part of a three-year, $28.5 million
contract for 152 heavy-duty tractors and trailers, as well as spare
parts.
Diesel
price up for fourth straight week
The average price of a gallon of diesel fuel nationwide increased
for a fourth straight week, though its advance slowed from recent weeks
with a 0.7 cent gain to $2.808 a gallon, according to US Department of
Energy information.

People
KLH Capital LP announced TERRY O'BRIEN has assumed the role of
president and director of business development for QualaWash Holdings
LLC. He joins MIKE BAUER, who is QualaWash chief executive officer.
O’Brien brings over 20 years of experience in the bulk transportation
industry to QualaWash and was former head of operations, sales, and
business development for Quality Distribution.
JERRY PORTIS, one of the founders of Midland Manufacturing, died Oct 22,
2009. Portis was a forward observer for the US Armed Forces during World
War II, participating in the D-Day invasion at Normandy, France, and
earning two Purple Heart commendations. In 1951, he teamed with partners
JOHN WHITE and BOB DRUCKER to form Midland Manufacturing. In the ensuing
58 years, Midland has grown to become a worldwide leader in the
manufacture of valves and fittings for rail tank cars. Portis served as
both lead designer and primary salesman for the Midland product lines.
He was active in the Association of American Railroads (AAR). Portis was
preceded in death by his wife Helen; and is survived by daughter Gail
DeMay; son Richard; and grandchildren Alex, David, Jacqueline, and
Sophia.

International Liquid Terminals Association will hold its Advanced
Tanks-Air Emissions training seminar on November 10-11 at the
Renaissance Hotel in Long Beach CA. This workshop has been updated to
include a half-day training on air issues pertaining directly to loading
rack operations. Companies that are modifying loading racks as required
for compliance with the new Gasoline Distribution GACT rule will not
want to miss this session. The Advanced Tanks workshop provides a
detailed look into air emissions issues relating to the design,
construction, and inspection of aboveground storage tanks. Registration
