Agriculture Secretary Tom Vilsack recently announced that the U.S.
Department of Agriculture (USDA) will fund existing conservation
projects in 41 eligible watersheds in 12 states this fiscal year as part
of its Mississippi River Basin Healthy Watersheds Initiative. The
initiative supports USDA’s continuing efforts to help landowners and
farmers protect and improve water quality in the Mississippi River Basin
in selected watersheds from Minnesota to the Gulf of Mexico.

USDA is seeking proposals for grants to improve water quality, air
quality and promote energy conservation in key U.S. watersheds. USDA’s
Natural Resources Conservation Service (NRCS) is making available $25
million through the Conservation Innovation Grants (CIG) program to
address natural resource concerns nationwide with a special emphasis on
the Chesapeake Bay Watershed and the Mississippi River Basin.

animals as part of a fundraising effort. This Christmas season, they are

The 2010-2011 Illinois Certified Livestock Manager Training (CLMT)
workshops begin this year in Bloomington, IL, on Dec. 14. Seven
subsequent workshops will be held around Illinois in the New Year, with
four workshops in January, two in February and one in March.

The University of Minnesota (UMN) is offering the Southern Minnesota
Corn College on Dec. 17 at the South Central College in North Mankato.
This program, sponsored by University of Minnesota Extension, the
Minnesota Corn Growers Association and South Central College, will run
from 8:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. and consists of a series of in-depth and
hands-on concurrent sessions.
Sessions will address a wide array of topics including nutrient
management tips, pest management, crops, soils, grain storage, and
economics. Dan Kaiser, UMN soil fertility specialist, will conduct a
hands-on lab demonstration on corn nutrient deficiencies and toxicities.
Jeff Vetsch, UMN soil scientist, will demonstrate different planter
attachments and fertilizer delivery system options to improve corn
yields.
Attendees can select the sessions that best meet their needs. For a

Costs are $40 if preregistered, $50 at the door. Class and lab space are

Nutrient management in high residue systems is just one of the items
on the agenda for the Conservation Tillage Conference and Trade Show on
Feb. 9 -10, 2011, at Bigwood Event Center in Fergus Falls, MN. The
conference program features researchers from universities and industry
in the northern Corn Belt and Canada. A full range of topics related to
conservation tillage will be covered during the two-day conference.
Registration fee is $140/person, which includes continuing education
units (CEUs). An early bird special $115/person is offered for those
