I say "it appears" because the final pieces of data -- December pork exports and imports -- will not be available until mid-February. My calculations for December 2010 through November 2011 show demand 1.2% higher than the same period 12 months earlier. Plus, the calculations of University of Missouri Agricultural Economist Ron Plain, who used estimated December trade figures, indicate demand will be positive for the 2011 calendar year. That record was built with solid gains in the first half of the year and "hanging on" in the second half as burgeoning exports reduced the amount of pork available in the United States and, I believe, a softening economy slowed the pace at which retail prices could be increased. Retail prices still set a record in September at $3.56/lb. and remained near that level ($3.46/lb.) in December, but steady demand would have pushed those values even higher given larger exports and concurrent lower domestic availability/consumption. The causes of metabolic bone diseases are usually related to deficiencies or imbalances in phosphorus, calcium and/or vitamin D deficiency. Calcium and phosphorus are essential nutrients that are tightly regulated in the blood because of the critical metabolic roles they play. Both are needed for normal mineralization of bone matrix which provides for normal bone density and strength. Bone is the reservoir for calcium and phosphorus, and acts as a buffer to assure calcium and phosphorus are adequate in blood. Scott Shearer, Bockorny Group, Washington, DC Congressmen Sam Farr (D-CA), Jeff Denham (R-CA), Kurt Schrader (D-OR) and Elton Gallegly (R-CA) have introduced HR 3798, the "Egg Products Inspection Act Amendments of 2012." The legislation would codify the agreement between the United Egg Producers (UEP) and the Humane Society of the United States (HSUS) to establish a national standard on cage sizes and enriched housing for egg laying hens. The changes required would be phased-in over 15 to 18 years. Congressman Farr said, "Having consistent rules and a national standard will help egg producers meet the consumer demand for safe, wholesome food and will send a message that doing what's good for animal welfare and what's good for industry economics are not mutually exclusive."
