Unit Conversion Tool
Convert popular spring units such as force, or retaining ring thrust capacities, into metric units with Smalley's new engineering tool. A simple conversion tool allows for units to be converted such as mass and weight, angular measurements, velocities, temperatures, pressures and densities and more. Additional engineering tools allow engineers to design custom wave springs and Spirolox® retaining rings. Custom designs can be manufactured from .200" to 90". Epoxy Adhesives Hold Their Own
Advances in adhesive bonding have made it competitive with high-performance traditional fasteners, such as the rows of rivets on airplanes, as well as other kinds of bonding such as brazing and welding. The use of adhesives could allow for lighter structures and longer service lives in aerospace, marine, electronic, and automotive uses, and can also improve the aesthetics of a product. In addition, adhesive joints can avoid the effects of heat and stress that welding or drilling holes can cause, which means designers may be able to cut back on attachment strength requirements. On the factory floor, adhesive bonding can also cut down on assembly costs, eliminate some steps from the manufacturing process, and reduce the amount of training and skill needed by workers. Using adhesives does, however, demand proper knowledge of how best to store, dispense, apply, and cure the adhesives and prepare the substrates.
Fastener Woes to Delay Flight of First Boeing 787 Jets
Delivery of Boeing's much-anticipated 787 Dreamliner will be pushed back once again due to problems with fasteners. Problems discovered during a routine quality-control inspection will force the company to replace thousands of fasteners that were improperly installed. This is the second time Boeing has run into problems with fasteners. Since the Dreamliner is made largely from carbon-fiber composites and machined titanium castings, instead of conventional steel and aluminum, Boeing had to come up with new types of fasteners to keep the plane together. Problems first erupted two years ago when suppliers had trouble getting enough of the specialized fasteners to assemble the first planes. The first Dreamliner delivered to Boeing was thus held together by thousands of temporary fasteners.
Gecko-like Glue Is Said to Be Stickiest Yet
U.S. researchers have developed a dry glue designed to mimic the adhesion of gecko feet that is three times as sticky as other gecko-inspired adhesive products. A 1-inch square of the adhesive can reportedly support the weight of a 220-pound man climbing up a vertical surface. "It's the stickiest dry glue yet," says Liming Dai of the University of Dayton, who authored an article on the glue in the journal Science. The glue can easily be lifted and reapplied thanks to curly strands of carbon that when lifted at an angle break the bond. One of the glue's potential uses is to remove the need for soldering electrical components, and since the glue is dry, it could be used at very low temperatures, such as in space, where conventional glues lose adhesion.

Latch Integrates Electronic Access
CONCORDVILLE, PA: The new Southco® R4-EM electronic rotary latch combines robust rotary latch security and electronic access convenience in a single integrated solution. Unlike a standard mechanical latch linked with a separate solenoid actuator, the gear-motor drive in the R4-EM delivers a better feel to latch actuation and is more efficient in terms of lower power requirements and higher load capability. The compact integrated latch design also makes the R4-EM easy to install, operate, and maintain. The 2.56" x 2.72" x 0.75" (65 x 69 x 19mm) housing requires minimal space and minimal protrusion inside the compartment, and installs simply with just two bolts to keep installation costs low. Its proven mechanical design and all-metal construction provide excellent vandal resistance with long-term durability and reliability. --- Southco
Quick Clamping Shaft Collars
MARLBOROUGH, MA: Ruland Manufacturing Company has introduced new quick clamping shaft collars. The new collars do not mar the shaft, do not require tools and are designed for quick adjustments. They are ideal for light duty applications with frequent setup changes or adjustments or where the need for tools is not practical. The quick clamping collars are designed with a low profile clamping lever which makes them suitable for rotating and stationary applications. Industries such as printing and packaging, as well as others, can benefit from the use of quick clamping collars to retain frequently changed items, such as rolls of media, or for rapid and precise adjustments of guide rails or other setup fixturing. The quick clamping collars are made from high quality aluminum with an anodized finish which has the advantage of being light-weight and having low inertia. The quick clamping shaft collars are available with bore sizes from 5/16" to 1 1/2" in the inch series and 8mm to 35mm in the metric series. --- Ruland Mfg. Co.
