EtherCAT Takes a Leading Role in
Motion Control
EtherCAT, the next generation Industrial Ethernet fieldbus continues
to make great strides in motion control. To date, 40 different vendors
have readily available or publicly announced high-performance EtherCAT
servo drives. This support from drive vendors is clear evidence that
EtherCAT has taken a leading role in motion control: no other Industrial
Ethernet technology is represented by such a variety of products from so
many drives vendors. With support from 40 servo drive vendors from 13
countries, EtherCAT decisively leaves behind special motion control
fieldbus systems that have been around for decades - EtherCAT is on its
way to becoming the world's leading motion control standard. Even more
vendors are currently developing EtherCAT servo drives, but have yet to
announce these new products publicly.

HART Test System Plays Key Role in
Ensuring Device Interoperability of Wired and Wireless HART
Devices
The new HART® Test System recently released by the HART
Communication Foundation plays a key role in ensuring device
interoperability of both wired and wireless HART-enabled devices. The
system automates device testing and verifies compliance to all revisions
of the HART Protocol standard. "The HART Test System is an integral part
in the HART Device Registration program. The system helps to assure the
interoperability of devices produced to the HART standard regardless of
the device manufacturer. So, users can buy with confidence a device that
is HART Registered, knowing it will work with the devices already
installed in their plant," says Ed Ladd, HCF Director of Technology
Programs. The HART Test System has the capability to work with wired
HART devices or through WirelessHART™ gateways that support the
standardized HART UDP interface. The new system is a complete testing
tool produced on the Linux operating system that includes the test
automation, application layer and analysis software for the verification
of a device's conformance to the HART Communication standard.

Hacking the Industrial
Network
Industrial control networks, generally referred to as SCADA
(Supervisory Control And Data Acquisition) systems have been used for
decades. These older legacy systems remain highly vulnerable to
intelligent remote attacks, as well as non-intelligent viruses, as these
systems are no longer isolated from the Internet. They are accessible
via company websites, wireless access points, USB drives, modems, radio
transmission, satellite, microwave, wiretap and remote maintenance
access. "Hacking the Industrial Network," compiled by an independent
consulting firm, is a compelling exposé of the numerous vulnerabilities
of industrial control networks currently in use throughout the world.
The report contains incidents involving major corporations, utilities,
nuclear plants and the Pentagon.

Industrial Controls Shipments Plunge
During the First Quarter of 2009
NEMA's Primary Industrial Controls Index experienced its largest
quarter-to-quarter decline on record, contracting more than 23 percent
in the first quarter of 2009 versus the fourth quarter of 2008. On a
year-over-year basis, the index showed a very rapid downward movement,
dropping 30.5 percent compared to the first quarter of 2008. Indeed,
just five quarters removed from registering a record high,
inflation-adjusted shipments of industrial control equipment have fallen
to their lowest level since 1991. Conditions in the broader industrial
controls market, as measured by the Primary Industrial Controls and
Adjustable Speed Drives index, were also weak, but slightly less so, as
this metric slipped 19.6 percent from the prior quarter and more than 26
percent on a year-over-year basis. Demand for industrial controls and
similar capital goods will remain weak for the next several quarters as
businesses try to restore profitability by downsizing operations,
liquidating inventories and delaying/canceling investment plans.

New Study Documents Progress of
Manufacturers Toward IT and Controls Engineering
Convergence
Rockwell Automation has released results of a new study representing
a broad cross-section of manufacturing industries revealing that
companies progressing toward converging their IT and controls
engineering organizations are reaping major benefits, including higher
efficiency, increased reliability, shorter project timelines and better
business continuity. The study also found that those with more
integration between these functions experience less conflict and are
more optimistic about the future of convergence.

Clear Object Sensors
MINNEAPOLIS, MN: Banner Engineering Corp. introduces the
WORLD-BEAM® QS30 Clear Object Sensor, providing reliable clear
object detection to solve challenging applications. The Clear Object
Sensor utilizes an advanced optical design to allow the sensor to see
translucent materials, ensuring dependable detection of clear targets
including PET bottles and glass containers. Additionally, the optical
design prevents the sensor from being tricked by specular reflections,
allowing the sensor to detect optically engineered surfaces such as
mirrors, LCD glass with polarizing films, and semiconductor wafers. The
Clear Object Sensor is easily configurable using either the push button
on the sensor or via a remote input line. The user can select from one
of three switching thresholds—light, medium or dark, depending on
the target's transparency level—to optimize detection and maximize
sensing stability. --- Banner Engineering Corp.

Fiber Optic Amplifiers with Digital
Display
OLD SAYBROOK, CT: Contrinex fiber-optic amplifiers for DIN-rail
mounting (DIN/EN 50022) feature an 8-digit, 14-segment LC display and
very small housings (31 x 60 x 10 mm), that permit optimum stacking in
large numbers, especially where space is limited. The distance can be
set by means of teach-in (including dynamic), with additional manual
fine adjustment. In addition to a setting range of 20 - 200 mm, these
devices attain switching frequencies of up to 4 kHz. The values
displayed are inversely proportional to the target distance. Increments
of < 1mm across the whole sensing range ensure that these amplifiers are
extremely precise. They also feature adjustable output switching delay
and stretching, and are resistant to environmental influences (IP 64).

Valve Status Monitors
HOUSTON, TX: Bray Controls has announced that the Series 52 2N1
ProxSensor line of valve status monitors has been expanded and improved.
The Series 52 now includes AS-i, DeviceNet™ and PROFIBUS® DP
BUS network units with a solenoid drive, plus new features have been
added to the entire line. Bray's 2N1 ProxSensors uniquely combine two
proximity sensors in one compact, self-contained and fully sealed
enclosure. These valve status monitors deliver the rapid, bounce-free
electronic valve signaling required for PLC, computer and solid-state
circuitry used in process control and information networks. All units
have a unique 5-year warranty against material or workmanship defects.
In addition to the factory pre-aligned Standard Targets, Bray now offers
Adjustable Targets. These allow the customer to individually set both
valve position signals at incremental angles before or on the fully open
and fully closed positions. DC and AC targets are stainless steel and
nonmagnetic. --- Bray Controls
